Obsolete Ground elements start to be scrapped after a year in the pool, according to the manual.

What happens to obsolete aircraft?

They are disensambled and turned into Armaments (although you dont get as many armaments as you needed to build them iirc)

Not that much of a problem, if you can be patient. As the production of the newer models builds up the computer will automatically replace the older models for you.

Might be an idea to incorporate in WITE2 the scrapping of older aircraft.

It's possible in this game too, but depends on data settings. Denniss decided against scrapping. You may have to use those planes.

I think that if you have replacements, or is it auto upgrade, on, the computer will swap out for older a/c if you don't have enough?

My question arises from a specific instance where, in Nov 1941, a bunch of Soviet I-153's went into a dogfight with German Bf 109E's. They didn't do particularly well to put it very mildly.

In fact the obsolete aircraft simply took up space in the dogfight that would otherwise have gone to more modern aircraft, such as Yak-1's. In my humble opinion, that means that I would actually have been better off without the I-153's in the first place. Result: I will now probably place them all in the pool and not use them at all.

If the I-153's are obsolete in 1941, why keep them around in large numbers until 1942 and later? Am I supposed to send them into dogfights with Bf 109G's and let my airgroup morale suffer accordingly?

Taking Deniss worries into account, then why not let them be scrapped beginning two years after they become obsolete? Or let them go after one year IF there are enough more modern fighter aircraft available in the pools (say a total of at least 1000)?

We'd had to rework the scrapping function so a/c would not gain all-arm points but a split into some Arm and more supplies.
Old aircraft are still useful for initial air unit training, especially on soviet side.
I introduced so many new a/c types so scenarios may already start with types eligible for scrapping.
Auto-Upgrade function is actually very good in replacing older types, swapping function seems sufficiently intelligent not to switch types back to older ones unless new type is in short supply.

I would have sworn the aircrafts were scrapped, just as many other pieces of equipment

Aircraft can be scrapped just like ground elements, giving armaments.
Perhaps if your game is based on older generic data, then scrapping is enabled for some aircraft.

For training squadrons. Freshly recruited pilots don't get the cool new toys.
