This is the first of what I hope will be a multi-part Scenario set in the South China Sea. It's an exploration of how a real territorial spat between multiple countries can spiral out of control.

This is a Beta version, the Briefing is a bit rough and I have used an up-gunned Battle Island facility for the Firey Cross Airstrip (a temporary work-around; the developers are working on providing some land mass for real facilities)...but I think it's OK for a first-testing:

You are in charge of Chinese Forces in the South China Sea Region.

SIGINT, HUMINT and other sources indicate some coordinated movements of Surface Ships and Aircraft by Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines. There have been recent meetings between these 3 Countries concerning our presence at Woody Island and Firey Cross Reef, and protests against our rightful presence on these islands have been lodged with the U.N. by all 3 Countries.

Your mission is to protect Chinese assets in the South China Sea.

I welcome all comments! (Let me know what you scored also, it helps set the Victory Scoring Conditions)

Updated 6/6/2016. Change Log:

Exchanged J-11's for J-10's on Firey Cross AB
Added more Biologics and Neutral boats
Deleted many extraneous Reference Points on China side
Refined AI Targeting and Patrols
Corrected and Updated Scoring/Briefing
Moved initial placement of Chinese Ships
Deleted some Chinese Bombers, AEW, and ECM planes from available inventory

D you mean the 4 ref points on Hainan Island? That's where your DF-12's are going to be "delivered" (i.e. teleport area). I couldn't figure out how to hide the points, but I'm sure there is a way.

I'll use a side called "Blue/Red Logic" that is used for creating such zones. This makes these kind of planning RPs invisible to the side they're serving.

Great solution! I was going to set up a dummy side with the units and the teleport zone, teleport them, and then use Lua to change sides of the units to China.

Your way is much easier, just use the dummy side to create the teleport area.

Thanks!

I am going to give it a go as soon as I am done with my "Queen for Day" training mission, I am still in awe of the modern tools of the trade available here and need to study them very carefully before embarking on any missions or operations. In the meantime I'd like to offer the warmest and dearest encouragement I am only able to for your project - along with the Falklands the South China Sea is one of my favourite theaters and hot spots

But it will going to be cliché if keep making scenarios based on famous locations only. I know I haven't think anywhere else better than using these spots to simulate the possible conflict/war in the future, but what if the 'hot spots' are just baits for a part of the grand strategy?

I like more variety and unorthodox war goals (conspiracy included) behind the 'obvious position', where the real threat should be strike at the least prepared targets.

I have some ideas for Part 2 of this Scenario. IMO, China seems very adept at utilizing a crisis to effect an unexpected Grand Strategy.

Need to get Part 1 out of the way first.

Honestly, one of my biggest disappointments with my late purchase of Harpoon was that the lion's share of the scenarios available covered obvious or hypothetical major belligerents pitted against each other with apparently no interesting or potential flashpoints emerging or that once emerged in the real world explored.I have always been interested in remote and obscure conflicts, irregular and asymmetric warfare, what Khruschev called "revolutionary wars" etc, the ones that are to be waged with limited goals and resources in tricky, complicated circumstances.
That is what I like very much about CMANO - that it has not neglected some less obvious or minor players, but expanded that in a truly lavish fashion, especially that in most wargames I know such situations are quite hard to model because of the complexity of the situations eg. modelling level of success in asymmetrical conflicts.
Anyway, I checked my South China Sea folder I created for myself in my CMANO directory and there is only a dozen scenarios at best when compared with six scenarios together covering the Dutch reclaiming their Caribbean territories and Spaniards defending and regaining their North African islands - extremely unlikely conflicts in fact - so is there really anything to worry about in terms of balance or does it have to be any semblance of balance in that?

It's a good question indeed, even the balance of power is a kind of goal for nearly every countries, consider it can be done without firing a shot.

Ultimately, it is Kitchens Sink's decision to fictionally predict what China ended up into from this scenario (as he mentioned for part 2), and I just point out there's definitely more than just see them pitting each other, and SCS is also not a Roman Arena. However, one thing that's very certain is, it doesn't have to be all about oil, land/island grab, national pride or even global hegemony to demand a war, especially when alliance(s) is involved. If something sound extremely laughable but also fishy plan can be issued from the Chairman who administering the war, then I can easily imagine something unexpected and ugly will happens to catch both sides in surprise, to complicate the war and entangle more real agendas and historical twists into it.

There are some obvious example like a sudden EMP/Nuclear strike in the name of testing (within Chinese's own water to assured the 'no-first-use' policy) and other countries caught into it. But there's should be more than that. I leave this to his own creation to figure out instead of me correcting how the entire war goes.

Alright, so far so good I daresay. I am attaching a savegame file and before I proceed any further I'd like someone more experienced than me to advise me since after over three years with the game and a vast experience in naval aviation sims I still don't seem to be able to fully grasp it: how to combine the bomber strike from the land based bombers in the north with SEAD flights form Firey Cross Reef airfield on either Vietnamese SAG in the east or the Malaysian one south east of the contested position? And how to add a successful offensive ECM flight? The one in the norths seems to emit the energy, but it's dropping the targets constantly. I'll look the forums up again, but have failed to find the relevant content before.
