In April 1942 many (all?) of the US subs get an upgrade. Among these are the Argonaut and the Nautilus, both of which can be converted to SST. Are there any others?

Narwhal is the same class as Nautilus. Don't know of any other SST candidates.

Afterthought: - I haven't re-checked the game data, but I seem to recall that the refit changes the type of mines that the subs can use (?), so you may want to use up the old mines before the conversions are all done.

Ah, thanks for the tip on the Narwhal. I'll be sure to check that one out. I'm playing against the AI so I don't need to be obsessive about squeezing everything I can from the mine OOB, but thanks again for that tip as well. It just seems like the SST boats would be really useful so I want to make as many as I can.

Isn't there a fourth that is also Narwhal class? Or am I mixing mods with stock?

In the Focus Pacific mod you have five boats that can upgrade to SST's....GP

I never use them as SST's

They have good enough range to act as fleet boats and if you are lucky enough to get a surface attack then those 6" guns tear merchants apart.

I usually have trouble with my S-Boats
Their torpedo's work and they get radar but their range is so short that you can limited in how you can deploy them.
You usually have to put them at a base big enough to get them torpedo's and then send them forward to refuel and then out on patrol.
Usually putting them at Brisbane and then using Darwin to refuel and then into the DEI works well.

I recommend you use Tracker. You don't "need" Tracker but it helps to sort by class.
I run it playing the Allies for these types of comparisons.

Put a AS at a forward base. I use Luganville and a few others from time to time. Naval support seems to help some as well....GP

I always use them as SSTs.

They're slow. Against any half-decent PBEM player you'll never get to use the sub guns as humans escort. And SSTs are great for taking dots and lone DEI (for example) bases you can then stock with patrol planes and an AVP.

Even in PBEM not every convoy gets protected. There are just not enough escorts to go around.

You should talk to Lokasenna.
