This is an interesting read. This new carrier does not use steam to launch planes, but this EMALS (Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System).

She is also 90,000 tons and has plenty of new defenses.

Gosh, how in the world did they miss to call the launch system EMAILS instead of EMALS

Another advantage of the EMALS that they completely failed to mention was in relation to habitation. When I was on the Connie (CV-64) my bunkroom was right below the #3 cat line. While in the Indian Ocean, it was over 120 degrees during airops in the room and thus uninhabitable. The noise was unbelievable too.... so at least they have solved the temperature problem!

You sure about that? Ever hear of magnetic induction cooking?

I wouldn't want to be exposed to those EM fields. There is some evidence that exposure to high EM fields are linked to some kinds of cancers. Aluminum ore is smelted in electric furnaces and some studies have found people who work in those foundries around those furnaces (which use a tremendous amount of electricity), have higher rates of cancers like leukemia.

I know someone who bunked directly under a catapult. Silence would wake you up.

Yep. Ask those who worked close to high power radar antennas in the 1950s to 1980s if they still live, many of them died of cancer caused by the extreme EM fields.

Can there not be shielding in place? I would doubt the Navy would knowingly put its sailors at risk without some attempt at protection! You should have seen what they did when we entered Subic Bay!

Hopefully the crew reductions would mean they could design the ship so the bunks don't need to be close to the EMALS.

This is fantastic. During the war on terror we have been involved in so many dogfights with AQ and Isis.

Well, many airstrikes have come off of carriers.

ever been in a load center? They are hot as hell too when the power is on. I'm also curious how that EMP burst will look on Chinese sensors. Sorry to say, I'm not sold on this EMALS system.

Well, I guess we better not put catapults on submarines then. Since much of the time the mission is to show the flag, maybe we can get those EMPs to look red, white and blue.

Why the hell could the not just shoot a Ford Pinto off of that deck? That would have been cool and is really what the viewing public (me) wants to see.

It has to face rearward during launch to ensure the biggest boom potential.

How about an AMC Gremlin? How about that thing that looks like a cube with all glass on the rear passenger side? What about the (Chrysler I think, or Dodge) that pretends to resemble a muscle car from the '50s? You know that thing that appears to be jacked up in back like a dragster and the roof slants down forward? We need to petition the Navy before it's too late. Oh, I forgot, throw in a Chevy Nova. How about any car that has that sorta coppery paintjob that really just looks like puke after you ate a whole bunch of bananas and candied apples?
