I haven't played this game in a while and with all the changes that have been made I was wondering playing as the Germans (v AI) what a reasonable first turn number of soviet aircraft destroyed I should be aiming towards?

Depends on your skills. My high was 5021 in the first turn and my low (with my new test and start tactics was 4.400).

But there's no good asking him how he gets such high numbers

3.7 is quite easy to obtain, make sure correct bombers fly (not ones from 100s miles away).

You have to get abs near the front or what?

No, sometimes the game insists on selecting planes from the northern part of your front (near Koenigsberg) to bombard airfields in the Ukraine (instead of selecting those planes in airbases close to Lvov). They will waste a lot of miles going back and forth and you will make less strikes because of that. The same sometimes happen when you use (later in the game) air transport. Instead of using nearest transports the game files them from other side of the front. Happened to me a lot in my current PBEM . Only looking at air group names or strange lack of fighters to escort (because at this distance they are unable to fly) helps to detect this. To "fix" this one has to go to move mode, click desired airbase (the one you want to use) and then go back to airbase bombard mode. That way you can even use Rumanian planes on turn 1 for bombarding, even though they are normally not available.
