Interview with "Dusty Kleiss" this past Veteran's Day. He's the only surviving SBD pilot from that day in June 1942.

Thanks for the post spence - sounds like quite a guy.

Several years back, while I was doing research on the Douglas TBD, I was fortunate enough to begin a correspondence with a member of Torpedo 6.
He was quite a guy too, flew in every mission for Torpedo 6 from Pearl Harbor up to Midway (he was a radio man/navigator in the TBD, but he transferred to radar operator just prior to Midway...so he was spared that one).

For years I wanted to mention him, but I thought better of it - I really respected him and wanted to preserve his privacy. He was (and hopefully still is, we haven't corresponded for quite a while now) quite a guy.

At Midway the TBDs flew with only 2 crew with the middle seat empty. It was USN practice to only carry a crew of 2 on torpedo strikes with the TBD. The weight saving probably helped, but the role of the middle seat guy was mostly unneeded. The USN knew the TBD was going to be replaced by the TBF after Midway, the first handful arrived at Pearl Harbor just before the battle started. The 6 TBFs that flew at Midway were VT-8 planes that arrived at Pearl after the Hornet sailed for Midway, so 6 of the 18 at Pearl were sent to Midway.

TBFs had radar from early on, all of the combat planes may have had radar, I'm not sure. I would not be surprised if the USN sent the middle seat guys off to radar school before Midway knowing that they weren't needed there and they would need to be trained for the new TBF.

He was a tail gunner but later joined the USMC and rose to the rank of Lt Col in the Marines.

His AAR for the attack by VT-3 at Midway is one of the AARs from various participants posted at The Battle of Midway Roundtable (www.midway42.org/). Not much from the Japanese side at that site (though most of the English stuff derives from Fuchida's book and has shown to be BS by various Japanese historians). There are however all sorts of contemporaneous documents from the USN, USAAF and USMC (pre-battle island garrison newspaper, Spruance's Fitness Report by Fletcher, AARs by various ships, squadrons and surviving aircrew). Really good reading.

The last SBD pilot who flew against the Kido Butai at the Battle of Midway, "Dusty Kleiss", has died at the age of 100.

The link: http://www.midway42.org/Backissues/2016/20160401.aspx

There's an amusing article about how he got the nickname "Dusty" too.

Nice to see the BoM Roundtable still going, I thought it had stopped being updated a while back.
