As the germans (I havent played as the soviets yet) I havent found much use for it except in the very first turn and supplies/fuel drops. I guess they are helpful in ground combat (but I dont know to what extent), however, the "bomb unit" mission is completely useless. The casualties you provoke are very small. Same goes for interdiction (although I read that it lowers morale, is that right?).

How do you get the most out of Luftwaffe?

PS. By the way, completely unrelated but, is there any easy way to distribute your support units? How can I make so that the ones I get as reinforcements arent handled by OKH to the units?

The bomb unit function can be extremely powerful. It inflicts few casualties but lots of disruption, and with enough air units u can heavily disrupt any stack you want. This can be especially key for the Soviets needing to break that one hex to make a pocket last an extra turn or rescue a handful of units out of a pocket.

No idea,

Getting our precious su's where we want them.

Two sets of rules, sappers/pioneers and construction/rr have one set. All others as follows.

At support level(s) 0-9 the computer will allocate the su's. X(0-9)per type, per hq as the computer see fit.

The migration, movement, of the su is up he chain of command, then down. Movement, hq-hq, is one level per turn. Works best if the hq are not moved.

To keep the computer from operating on our su's we "lock" the hq. Lock and nothing moves, but may be moved manually.

Here's how.

Axis t1. Decide which su's you want with combat units. The ones in that combat units chain of command may be assigned for free. Just hit the assign icon in the combat unit window, lower right, and take your pick. Hint, hasty attacks are the order of the day for lots of the summer so stuff like stugs and pioneers go to mobile units. Su's in hq will not participate in hasty attacks.

Set all hq support level to 0. They will still participate in the t1 attacks. They will all begin their migration up (chain of command, in the logistics phase, I knew you were paying attention, but I repeated it anyway)

t2, the higher hq are beginning to fill up, all the xxx hq should be empty, except for the pioneers, construction.

To be continued, don't want to time out

continued..

Su's in hq don't participate in hasty attacks if the hq has moved. Edit to above.

axis t2 and on, again assign su to combat units as t1. More su will now be in higher level hq.

To use su in hq for combat use "assign" in the hq window. Select for free, if you want them to stay, lock the hq, otherwise they go back to from where they came.

Soon enough everything will be in OKH and available to any hq.

Even though OKH is at 0 support level everything goes there.

pretty much the way Charlie says...

set corps commitment levels to 1, higher HQs to zero, play the game; eventually (3 turns?) you'll have level support units at corps HQs and a bunches of everything at GHQ. move GHQ to central location.

At any time in the process assign additional support units to corps HQs where more or certain SUs may be desired then lock that corps' commitment level.

construction units & pioneers will be different, but that difference will be clear after the others are cleared up.

Thanks a lot charlie0311. Very helpful.

What about the Luftwaffe? What do you do with it?

I might write 10 pages but most would be wrong or of only opinion in nature. Air rules pretty much always in flux as the new patches come out.

For axis 41 you want to do recon, bomb stronger units before attacks, and fly supply to Pzs. Bombing Orsinovets, the port supplying Lgrad is thought to be a good idea.

For turn one, some like to devastate the Red AF, I use the LW for ground support and "bomb unit" only, and send airgroups with damaged planes to reserve.

Every point of view has advantages.

Be careful not to overload your abs, check the support in the airbase window. Transports should get their own ab because that ab will have to stay close to functioning railhead.

The "first mission of turn rule" has made it tricky to provide fighter escort. If the fighters escort your recon, then generally they won't be any left to escort "bomb unit" missions. I would fly unescorted recon if I knew I was going to want to use "bomb unit" during the turn.

As far as the air set up goes, percentage to fly, etc, all that stuff in the air doctrine window, really don't know the best answer.

Not so much help, just have fun with it and try different things, and, watch the aar's by the experienced players.

Man, every new(ish) player will inevitably say "Bomb Unit is useless".
Nope. One of the most powerful offensive tools for either side.

It's not about the casualties on the battle report; it's about the disruption. Any yokel who has to dive out of the way of a Jabo isn't shooting. Just re-load one of your single-player save games, try it with Romanians on offense. The difference should be readily apparent, and Romanian air might not even kill a single person.

Bear in mind the per-requisites for flying ground attack missions or you will be frustrated as ****.
Only bombers (and fighter escorts) with 0% miles flown can conduct unit attacks.
Plan accordingly.

Helpful vet trick:
At start of turn, open the Command Screen and set all your aircraft to Night Missions: YES
This prevents anything from flying to support (or intercept) enemy ground attacks (important if you have a surrounded unit you know you can defeat without airpower).

Turn night missions OFF as necessary to get ground attack support (this will keep unnecessary air groups from flying miles).
As necessary, turn night missions OFF to conduct your unit attacks (thereafter, those air groups can easily support local ground combats).
