I learn something today. Have to spend PP to appoint aggressive admirals to get the job done. Ship captains don't match up.

Well yes and no. Unless you want to invest in an Admiral you can avoid the need and "keep" the change.

Remember that once you disband a TF, the TF commander (if NOT a ship's captain) goes away and you have "wasted" those political points (the flag officer goes back into the pool of individuals). What I often do is take the ship that is the TF flag (by virtue of some algorithm that selects that ship's captain to be the most "senior") and if that captain has characteristics that are less than desirable, I transfer the ship out of the TF (while in port) and then select that ship (from those that are anchored) and change out the captain to a far more deserving individual (thus the ship's captain is changed, NOT the TF's flag officer). Then I go back to the TF at hand and re-transfer that ship back into the TF where it assumes command (as the same algorithm apples) and I have a NEW TF commander that has the characteristics that I want AND the added bonus that if I disband the TF, the new captain stays with the former TF flagship and the PPs are NOT wasted. Or - never disband a combat TF after a good admiral is assigned. Instead, transfer any ships needing repair into the port, but keep the TF in being. If an air combat TF, at least 1 CV must remain in the TF or it will change to surface combat automatically (from my experience), and you can't change it back.

Nice workaround!

You can change it back. Change it to an Escort TF, add your CV and it becomes an Air Combat TF.

Another good idea!!

Thanks Rusty, I thought of it as gamie for a while but then realized that the selection of the CO of a ship is somewhat arbitrary (except in historical circumstances with certain ships) and that re-selecting him is not messing with the "system" so I felt better.

I have had good luck doing that with SCTFs, the only problem I run into is with CVTFs. Some of the good CV admirals (high AIR score) are not as good at Naval, which you want for your CV Captains. For these, I try to keep the TF intact (using a CL or something and not disbanding to keep the admiral in place. Somehwat realistic, as many TF Commanders transferred their flag to a CL at different times, if CVs needed repairs etc.

IMHO...In a perfect world each ship screen would have an extra 'slot" added to assign it as the "Flag" so when you purchase a TF leader, he will automatically be assigned to your designated FLAG ship and not be lost the next time you put the boys in port for R&R....

In a perfect world somebody would do some research and get a list of the ships which earned the "Big E" each year so we might look to boosting the numbers on certain ships..
Every navy had ships the others looked up to..

I used to think that Admirals mattered but it was explained to me that it does not matter what the rank is of the leader-just the stats. It should however matter as there is a reason that some officers make admiral.

Well yes, but those reasons might be ability and they might be political influence.

Roger that!!!!!...My dad used to tell me of the "many" officers he knew who had never been near the front who wore all kinds of ribbons other REMF officers had awarded each other..
According to one of my old CO's a lot of the Pentagon ribbons were never earned outside D.C.
Read David Hackworths' book ABOUT FACE.....

Every promising commander must be given the best training so that he can lead his (or her) people well. Every infantry man must attend air borne course to fight well.

Well I tried the same aggressive admiral 3 nights in a row and the damages to the Japanese were not as good as the first day. If I appoint a new admiral every sortie, the results are very good everytime. So got to spend PP to rotate admirals leading bombardment tf - only those with high naval ratings need to be used.
