Well..since I just spent some time figuring it out, I thought I would share my findings with you lucky people.

The allies have 5 types of Rec aircraft available.

a) F-5A Lightning. Range: 775 Miles. Camera: High or Low
b) Mustang I. Range: 387 Miles. Camera: Low ONLY
c) Spitfire PR.XI Range: 518 Miles. Camera: Low or High
d) F-9 Fortress Range: 1022 Miles. Camera: High ONLY
e) F-6A Mustang Range: 395 Miles. Camera: Low ONLY
f) Mosquito PR.XVI Range: 640 Miles. Camera: Low or High

Low camera load outs want an altitude of 12000 feet.

High camera load outs want an altitude of 35000 feet.

The newest patch (beta 1.00.13) says aircraft will change up to 10000 feet of altitude to try and reach those heights.

Although it doesn't say anywhere I suspect that Low camera's are good at finding units, and such, and High camera's are best used for strategic pictures.

So make sure you have your Mustangs in separate Air AD's then your F-9 Fortress'. That way you won't be wasting any pictures.

You can also manually assign planes and set altitude if you mix high and low Recon within the AirHQ.

How exactly do you set up different altitudes for different planes in the same AD? I've seen reference to this in a number of places, or do you mean setting up different ADs at different altitudes? If the latter, this can get cumbersome with respect to escorts.

You have to do different ADs. Not that much work actually. I have two Recon ADs for the 8th with different planes and altitudes set. After that you only have to switch target.

Mosquito range seems a bit short. Does that account for tanks? Or are the tanks extra?

Great findings LiquidSky. +1 and thanks for sharing. Is there any advantage to low-altitude recon over high (or vice-versa)? I wonder if there would be any benefits by combining a high-alt recon AD with a low-alt recon AD on the same hex.

The Players Handbook guide (#9) says 25K for High Camera. Manual says 35k. Which is correct I wonder? Thanks for doing this by the way!

In case of doubt, the editor is your truly best friend.

High and low camera are listed in the device category.

Low camera : load 30, effective ceiling 12.000, max ceiling 16.800
High camera : load 75, effective ceiling 36.000, max ceiling 50.000

Yes starting to learn that.... No wonder my High Camera at 25K seems kind of blind. 36k the sweet spot and not 35k either.
Thanks for the heads up!

Does anyone know if this is true? It make sense, but that doesn't mean it is true. I have been using my high level cameras for regular reconnaissance and in clear weather they seem to work even better than the low level cameras in locating enemy units.

What? No love for the mid-level camera?

I know the Mosquito PR.XVI has load outs with it, not sure if it is on any others.

They didn't have mid range camera's when I figured these planes out. Guess an update is in order. Have to read up what altitude mid range is too.

I have edited this out as further testing indicated I didn't know what I was talking about. Nothing unusual in that.

As far as I can tell the way airrecon works is like this:

Sorry, still not quite getting what you're saying.

Apparently I didn't know what I was saying either. I'll do some more testing and post my results later.

If you mean by decreasing the mission percent, then yes that certainly does work to reduce A2A losses. But my experience is that it also means that my recon levels in each hex are also significantly reduced. have you been able to reduce losses while also getting good recon levels? If so I would love to know how.

You can try to increase intensity. Adding escorts or AS in the area should also help.

I've put my strat recce in a separate air command and set each recce doctrine accordingly.
So strat recce has small flights and tactical recce has larger.
