In the Subunit Selector, under Armaments, I'm a bit confused about the specific numbers listed.

An example, from the M1A1..

120mm M256: 38 AP, 41 HEAT, 6 Area, Range 6000 m. / 40 ammo

AP and HEAT numbers appear to relate to their effectiveness. But are these compared to Front / Flank Protection of armoured units?? What about HEAT rounds?
6 Area, range 6000 m. - This has me baffled.. I originally read this as 12 hexes, (at 500m per hex) but what does the 6 Area indicate??

Thanks for any enlightenment!

AP = kinetic round pen factor, HEAT = high explosive anti-tank pen factor, AREA = small arms/he round factor used against soft targets, range is max gun range in meters. Pen factors are roughly 15mm per point.
