You'd think I'd know this but...

How are a/c cruising speed and max speed used in game?

Just guessing:
Cruise speed for flight to target and back, keeping formation with other planes (fighter covering bombers - with too big cruise speed difference they have lesser chance to coordinate), effective patrol distance, ...

Max speed for combat purposes, rolls and calculations

Going on what you said and ideally a fighter with a slower cruise speed would be best for escorting a strike while something with a high cruise speed best for a sweep

Except if the fighter's cruising speed is lower than the cruising speed of the bombers. But yes on the faster speed for sweeping. O\

Have to admit that I don't pay attention to cruising speed at all. (I suppose I should) but of all the in game fighter traits, I think speed is king.

True but in terms of escorts, cruising speed mismatches can create coordination problems such as the escorts arriving after the strike package if the escorts cruise at a slower speed than the bombers. Probably more of an IJ problem than Allied I suspect

Barb seems to have a handle on it. This 'speed is king' crap is just that. Lots going on in many different subroutines. Some idiot saying "THIS IS HOW IT IS", is just that; some idiot that ain't got a clue.

Listen. Read. Learn.

One more hint - if calculating what will arrive first - sweep or bombers - or in a matter of coordinating strikes from multiple bases and multiple aircraft types... that is working for me so far quite well.

1. the planes has to get to their altitude:
assigned bomb(sweep) altitude (feets) / climb speed (feets per minutes) = minutes to get into assigned altitude
+
2. the planes has to get to their target:
distance in hexes * 40 miles per hex / cruise speed (miles per hour) / 60 minutes per hour = minutes to get to target
(now there is some confusion - hex has 40 nautical miles, but 46 imperial miles... aircraft speed in game is stated in nautical miles (knots), or imperial miles?)
=
total time to target

The bigger the delta for sweep vs bomber raid = higher chance the sweep will arrive first.
The lower delta for escort (flying roughly at altitude of bombers) vs bombers = higher chance of arriving together
In case of several bomber types in the same raid and/or several originating bases - the closer the time-to-target, the higher chance they will arrive at the same time.

All above is still subject to various leader, HQ, exp, etc rolls...

And its still important to notice that chances are still just that: chances. 10-hex range difference and having slower cruising speeds didn't stop bombers from arriving over target before the sweeps in 3 consecutive days even when they flew in the same phase. Luckily they met no enemy CAP. Whenever planes fly from different airfields there is always the risk of something going horribly wrong.
