What am I missing? I cannot select prewarp size for myself but I can give the AI prewarp size? Where is this option for me as I do not want an advantage?

When you set your tech level to PreWarp, your size is automatically PreWarp, as well. This is quite confusing, I remember struggling with trying to understand it, as well.

Ah thanks that is confusing! But if tech level determines size then what is the size option for?

OK, let me see if I can clear this up for you:

When you select pre-warp as your empire's start tech level, you start with no ships capable of leaving your home system. A pre-warp start gives you nothing but a home planet to start with. There is no choice on empire size in pre-warp, since you lack the technology to colonize any planets at that tech level (colonizing is a level 1 tech).

An AI pre-warp empire will default to having only 1 planet, even if you set it to a different size. Again, at pre-warp, the AI lacks the colony tech.

The size function comes into play in a normal empire (normal tech level) or higher in that setting to the different sizes will determine how many planets you control. Same goes for AI empires set to normal (or tech level 1+) with empire size.

Great explanation thanks!!!

So essentially what you are saying is that pre-warp and starting are the same setting on the expansion slider and the size slider up until normal?

No, Starting empires while they have only 1 planet can have hyperdrive and colony technology if the research level is set to normal or higher (IE Tech level 1, etc). They aren't as limited as pre-warp empires, and you can immediately start colonizing planets so long as you choose normal tech level or higher.

Right so expansion slider set to prewarp or starting and size slider set to prewarp or starting are both the same as long as tech slider is at prewarp or starting? In other words setting expansion at prewarp or starting and the AI players at size prewarp or starting makes no difference if the tech level is set at prewarp or starting? So essentially what you are saying is that pre-warp and starting are the same setting on the expansion slider and the size slider up until normal tech setting?
