Hi All, I updated this on 11/16/14 fixed issues with the scenario Finely working correctly after latest update to command.
got turns to work well enough. Added another ship to coastal patrol. Changed weapon loadout to match Scenario 2

This scenario is a little different then the other single unit scenarios posted here. Time compression is important here so let me know if time compression is an issue. I am also running 1.03 release candidate which is a must for this. You have to follow a soviet sub to complete your mission. You may have to play it a few times to get the maneuvers correct. The Victor takes a different route each time.

Let me know your thoughts on this scenario and any issues you may have. I would like ways to improve it.

It is scenarios like this is where drawing tool would be helpful. Us reference points to layout your search area.

September 5, 1983 / 2100 GMT

To: USS Baltimore

From: COMSUBLATL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Captain,

On September 1, South Korean airlines flight 007 from New York City to Seoul, via Anchorage, was shot down by the Soviets. Tensions are very high. NATO is sending a carrier group to the North Atlantic. Early intelligence reports the Soviet Northern Fleet is preparing to put to sea. 6 hours ago the new Typhoon class SSBN (TK-208) and two Victor IIIs (K-254 and K-298) left port and we do not know their intentions. We just received flash intelligence that a third Victor III (K-502) will be leaving port tomorrow morning at 0300 GMT. The intelligence states that K-502 is assigned to patrol the southern approaches to TK-208's patrol zone. K-502 will be leaving from the submarine base located in Kola bay.

Your Orders: Discover and follow K-502 and when you feel that K-502 has reached her patrol zone, break-off contact and proceed north undetected 35 to 45 miles to the bottom of TK-208's patrol zone. Locate TK-208 and report her position.

You have 6 hrs to Transit to the determined best intercept point N70.03’, E35.40’, marked on the map, to position yourself for K-502’s departure

TK-208 is believed to have very good passive haul and towed array sonar so use caution as you approach and search her patrol zone. We believe the other two Victor IIIs are likely patrolling areas around TK-208 as well.

We expect ASW aircraft to be operating in the Barents Sea along with any ships patrolling the Kola Peninsula coast this time of year. Use caution when you approach the bay area as you can expect heavy harbor patrols.

Tensions are very high and Washington considers this act of aggression against innocent passengers and crew of flight 007 as the first shot. Let me be clear; if the Northern Fleet does put to sea within the next 12 hours, NATO may start hostilities.

Captain, this is the cat and mouse game we train for. Do not let them know you are there. Let them lead us to her. Good hunting and Gods Speed.

I played this one today and enjoyed it. My sub was detected when I came out of the SSN's baffles to turn north to the Typhoon search zone. I ignored the orders to return home in shame and continued to play anyway. Managed to kill the Typhoon but had quite a day with ASW aircraft, sonobuoys, a Krivak and other SSNs all over me. I couldn't escape but did get one more kill on my way to the bottom of the Barents.

I find the single unit scenarios very enjoyable because it allows one to concentrate on that platform and really learn its sensors and weapons.

Thanks for building this one.

I am glad you enjoyed it. It is my first scenario. The victor may arrive at different points in its patrol area . This makes a different locations to the typhoon each time. I wanted to make this as replayable as possible. I am working on making this a kill and escape mission with more actions for better scoring. The detection trigger doesn't allow classification by a side. So you have to give the player the kill order if you want the player to classify a contact before killing it. Update coming soon.

Played this three times, all definitely working fine and its a very nice scenario. Have to say its pretty damm tough and I haven't beaten it yet.
I think if you win it on the first outing you need a medal!

At first outing I thought I was being clever, found the Victor and sat quiet at zero speed, sadly the sub literally ran over the top of me and I got detected.
Next try I lost contact with the Victor, didn't know where to turn off, then lost contact with everyone. Survived but no contact.
The next trial I didn't get to the Typhoon, and got detected by the Victor escort.

The Victor is actually pretty difficult to precisely follow as she runs at a high speed, judging where to sprint and where to drift is no easy matter.

Definitely tricky but I don't see that necessarily as an issue. If you wanted to make it easier I think some of the escort subs would need to use no active sonar?

I did exactly that. No active sonar. The subs are too close together. Thanks for letting me know.

I want to say thanks for the review. As for staying silent from the Victor in this case is the layer. you will notice that closer to the bay, the stronger the layer is. The Victor does not have a towed array.

I haven't seen the Victors go to active sonar yet . The FF and corvettes do and the helloes.

There is a small chance that one of the escort victors could pick you up while you are trailing the departing Victor near his patrol area.

You have to go north 30t o 45 miles or so before you start your search.

I fixed a few of the messages today so do another download.

I have a write up on how to follow the sub and I will post it if enough people ask me to. It is pretty Easley.

When they detected you, did they fire at you?

I don't think they opened fire, and I may have been mistaken on the active sonar ping. I can't see it being an issue if it is a tricky scenario, many will rleish the challenge. I just meant its clearly not a beginner's scenario if that makes sense.

I know it's not..

This keeps it simple but challenging. It started simple and I learned a lot from here and from my harpoon days. Being a gamer that played silent hunter, tc 688 and others for the last 30 years, As I started with the events editor and testing, I got into it. If anyone wants tips on following the sub, I may put them in a the war room thread. I loved building this it is different and fun to play.
I am thinking of making a follow up scenario on the life and times of the USS Baltimore.

Great. I did not realize the victors and typhoon settings allowed them to go active with their sonar. I corrected that today.

Brilliant!
Interessting, very challenging and in my opinion the perfect scenario for beginners to get a closer look on how submarines (sensors, layers, cavitation) work. Keep it coming!

I added turns in the victors path. He starts on one of two possible paths to follow but the turns are different because the destination is different each time.

The next USS Baltimore scenario.

After hostilities started Six days ago, USS Baltimore, having killed a Typhoon SSBN and a Victor III, is emerging in the Norwegian Sea from under the ice. The Soviets, with its capture of Reykjavik, is taking this opportunity to build up Iceland and expand its grip on the North Atlantic. The flood of soviet submarines through the Norwegian Sea into the North Atlantic will clear the way for the supply convoy. USS Baltimore is the only asset available in the Norwegian Sea, after the loss of Iceland and the decimation of the North Atlantic carrier fleet, to limit Soviet advancements. Can USS Baltimore restrict the growth of men and material in Soviet Iceland and can she suppress the flow of soviet subs into the North Atlantic?

Coming Soon. USS Baltimore SC2 - Two Birds One Stone 1983
