I wanted to let you know that my Stalingrad scenario "Operation Hubertus" is available for download.

Operation Hubertus is the 1st of three scenarios I have planned for the Stalingrad front. It covers three very intense days of desperate fighting near the end of German offensive operations in the City. Historically, after Hubertus' completion, the Soviets launched a counterattack and encircled the German 6th Army along with a collection of Axis satellite units.

At the time of this operation, the German divisions within Stalingrad were almost spent, with many under 50% of their manpower. A plan was suggested to and approved by Hitler to use Pioneer units to eliminate the remaining Soviet bridgeheads. The Soviet formations within Stalingrad were in even worse shape with many hovering around 30% of their manpower strength.

These Pioneer units were collected from across the Eastern front and attached to the front-line units within Stalingrad. In addition, Pioneer Assault Group Linden was formed and directed to lead the attack.

Along with the scenario, there is a Soviet estab file available for download. The formations included for this scenario are Guards Rifle and Rifle divisions.

I am new to Command Ops, and have the Battles from the Bulge game. Am I able to download this Stalingrad scenario and play it, or do I need one of the other Command Ops games (and which one)?

Hi there. I don't know if you will need the other ones. I think you should be okay as I am including a custom map and estab file for download along with the scenario.

Hi Wodin. I hope you like it. I updated the estab file yesterday to fix an issue with the 14.5mm Soviet anti-tank rifle. I also changed their counter text from blue to white.

Hubertus covers fighting within Stalingrad. Race to the Volga which I will release within a week or two, covers the German entry into the city. For that scenario, the map size is basically doubled and the formations are not as degraded from constant fighting.

Downloaded and placed in folders as per instructions. Opened and found operation Hubertus scenario. Upon trying to open scenario, got message saying I need v4.5.264 (I have v4.4.263). I tried using the update and it says I am running most current version. Any ideas?

Thanks! Worked like a charm. I usually don't have good luck with putting files in the right places, but was able to follow your easy instructions and I have the scenario working and it looks excellent! It was a members patch as you pointed out too.

Hmm. I don't know for sure. Maybe try the downloading the files again?

If you are unsure where they go, they should be placed as below:

Estab, estab xml and the estab images file all go in the estab folder

the map and map cache files go into the map folder and the scenario file goes into the my scenario folder.

Also, to use the signature are, you need to put both signature files in the default folder under graphics

This looks really interesting. CHill, did/can you tweak the AI to account for the Red Army doctrine? (say more direct artillery support, inflexible c&c, less indirect fire, higher loss tolerance? All that good stuff that made being a Red Army soldier..umm exciting.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Governato. I looked at the formation section of the estab but decided not to tackle this time.

The mix of weapons gives the Soviet line formations some flexibility when you play them. They also have an abundance of units.

Operation Hubertus models seven shattered Soviet divisions without armor and little in the way of reinforcements and heavy weapons. The terrain and fire support from the eastern Volga makes them formidable. Its a tough slog for the Germans and it is a grind for the Soviets, just like the real battle.

I am actually working on a smaller scenario now set outside Rostov in 1941. The Soviet Rifle formations with their 1941 force structure seem much different. I might tackle formations with this one. I hope you enjoy the scenario!

Just a link to a book with very detailed information about company to regiment scale actions on the eastern Front. It's a great read!

I hope it will be useful to design other exciting East Front scenarios :).

This one is probably useful as well:

Thanks Governato this will be useful. I appreciate it very much! I've got another scenario I will likely push live tonight. Objective Taganrog. Its set in 1941 and covers part of 14th Panzer's drive on Rostov-on-Don.

I would like to say well done, CapHillrat.
A relative was a German officer in the Stalingrad battle, and I read his journal perhaps~ 20 yrs ago. Your scenario could be taken right out of his notes. Incredible job sir

Thanks Navwarcol! Much appreciated. I have another scenario for Stalingrad coming out within a day or two. It is called Race to the Volga and covers the entry of the German forces into the City.

Another good link to Red Army troops tactics

Russian Combat Methods in World War II

Beware that it is described from the German point of view with an eye on the Cold War (the book is from 1950), but it is quite useful.
Even modern sources from Russian archives emphasize the lack of flexibility of Red Army units below division level. It'd be great to have that reflected in the AI behavior.

EDIT: link now works!
