Looking for another CW game, pondering this, wondering why after this many years this game is still kinda expensive for its age? Don't get me wrong the sale helps - just so many other games on my list too that are ahead of this at the price level. Or should just keep playing CWII and wait for the newer version of this to come out and put that on the must buy list.

I still play this game from time to time. Between it and Grigsby's WBTS it's a toss up. For me I think the leadership hierarchy is higher here, also the detailed battles are fun. WBTS has some other strengths and I find myself playing it more often when I play solo, but I miss the leadership stuff. You cannot go wrong with either. My brother in-law is here this weekend and we always play this when he comes over. It's just fun with all the options you have for configuring what you have to manage. VERY VERY detailed in that regard. General ratings are a blast here too. Can't say enough about how they did this. Staff ratings are fun if you turn those..... Just lots of options and I think you would enjoy the game if you want a civil war game.

Thanks for the info, I think I will save it for my January purchase before the sale runs out.

I have played the game lots and lots vs. the AI but never against a human. I love the game engine. Map is okay but could use a few more areas, especially in the east. Even though the game engine is excellent, the AI isn't. The Confederate AI puts a huge garrison in Richmond. TOO BIG. It will strip the entire South of troops to garrison Richmond if even a medium sized Union force invades Virginia. In some thread awhile back I read this could be "modeled" but I'm not good enough to "model." Also, in the West the Confederate AI is too aggressive. It defends Kentucky and Missouri with a passion. No defense in depth like JE Johnston wanted. I haven't played the South much so I can't give you a good description of the Union AI. My four Union Civil War grandfathers would raise up and haunt me if I played the South. Also, the naval part of the game isn't strong. I'm not saying it's bad. There just isn't much to it. I too like the optional general ratings. Fun to have an awful Grant and an excellent Ben Butler and everything in-between. I too like all the game options that can be turned on and off to give the exact difficulty you want. So, long story short ... like all computer games ... it has strengths and weaknesses ... good engine ... weak AI ... great difficulty options ... shallow naval play ... and so on.
