e: Avadon is actually of an example of a game that I bought on Steam sale and mucked about for a bit before deciding it wasn't worth more of my time. But the discount on the sale meant that I don't have any buyer's remorse and he got some money out of me and I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested in that RPG niche.

I'm curious if Matrix have considered Steam Guest Passes and such? How long would it take to "get going" with a game like Panzer Corps for example? Once it gets approved on Greenlight, would you be willing to to set up guest passes with a set number of in-game hours? This would allow potential customers to get properly acquainted with the game without you having to trouble yourselves with a dedicated demo version. You could even set up a page so that people have to visit your site, and authenticate via Steam, to get the guest passes and then track how many of these people actually buy the game.

Panzer Corps is a game that does demo quite well and has a demo available already. I know nothing about guest passes so can't comment on their suitability for other games but the issue is more that people need to persist with a lot of these games together the most out of them. If you get it for free you give up at the first hurdle as you have invested nothing. If you paid for it you persist through some frustration and may well really enjoy the same game you would have dropped if it was free.

IMO, games like this don't benefit from a demo. It's a slow moving game. Developing colonies, infrastructure, your economy, is not something that can be done quickly. A year of game time to build a factory. And then money and resources and population to support it. Several years to get a colony, and that's if it doesn't get trashed by rebellious natives.

This low price is probably the result of yet another GamersGate screw-up; this is the company that is infamous for accidentally stacking discounts (first 70% off, and then another 70% off for good measure), at one point resulting in them accidentally selling a $300 Bethesda Softworks collection for $30 (90% off!), which included a couple of titles that at that time retailed for more than $30 each, even when on sale! That did not end well.
