VGS-1 (VS-201)

Post by Kereguelen »

Hi,

does anybody know what happened to VGS-1 (the airgroup of AVG-1/CVE-1 Long Island; formerly named VS-201). It seems (from photos) that the Long Island did arrive in the Pacific with VGS-1 embarked (8x F4F-4 and 12x SOC-3A or 12x F4F-4 and 8x SOC-3A) in June 1942, but I have found no clue about what happened to this squadron afterwards (disbanded, renamed????).

Thanks!

I believe I read somewhere it was disbanded shortly after the Long Island arrived in the Pacific. Possibly a month or so. The planes and pilots were absorbed by other units.

That's right. Long Island operated with her air group during the battle of Midway and a little after. Sometime in the fall of 1942 (October, I think) her air group was removed and she was dedicated to training.

I believe VGS-1 was split into VGS-1 and VGF-1 sometime in the late summer, 1942.

Many thanks!

Further research indicates that VGS-1 existed until February 1943. It is listed in the OOB (well, aircraft distribution) for the US Navy on 28th January 1943 for the last time (missing from 9th February 1943 onwards).

Shore based, located at San Diego with 12x F4F-4 and 9x TBF-1 assigned.

I wonder if the squadron was simply renamed and placed on a CVE afterwards?

so you mean in the real war, they created and erased units based on the available planes and pilots? [X(]

and here i thought it was really easy to make planes and pilots, but impossible to change a unit's size on paper from 27 to 36 [:D]

Transferred to Atlantic Fleet and renamed VC-1 1/3/43
