I think there was an experimental dual hull p-51.

edit: Went looking and found whats in your picture I think. The North American F-82 Twin Mustang. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_F-82_Twin_Mustang

Based off of a p-51, 270 built, but never made it into operational service.

So, one pilot and one gunner?  What were the roles of the two "pilots"?

Extended range and 2 pilots limited fatigue factor.  Weird design.

Pardon me for being an ignoramus, but would one prop turn clockwise, the other counterclockwise?

Edited to Add Wiki Info that Answered the Question:
The XP-82 was to be powered by two Packard-built Rolls-Royce V-1650 Merlin engines. Initially, the left engine was a V-1650-23 with a gear reduction box to allow the left propeller to turn opposite to the right propeller, which was driven by the more conventional V-1650-25. In this arrangement both propellers would turn upward as they approached the center wing, which in theory would have allowed better single-engine control. This proved not to be the case when the aircraft refused to become airborne during its first flight attempt. After a month of work North American engineers finally discovered that rotating the propellers to meet in the center on their upward turn created sufficient drag to cancel out all lift from the center wing section, one quarter of the aircraft's total wing surface area. The engines and propellers were then exchanged, with their rotation meeting on the downward turn, and the problem was fully solved.

Edited to Note that my PS below was answered in the negative.
P.S. This isn't an elaborate hoax to make us ignoramusses feel ignorant, is it?

This photo from the Wiki article is more asthetically pleasing I suppose.

Gives a literal new meaning for the order to BREAK.

Actually according to this book, this book, some of the first fighters that mixed it up over Korea with in hours of the war start was some F-82's flying out of southern Japan and they tagged a couple of IL-10's of the NKAF, along with flying some initial armed road recce missions in the opening days. Only after a few of the Yak-9's started to fly and give the F-82's a run for thier money with regards to manuverablity that the F-82's started to fly more night interceptor missions.

I have used these in Downfall against the AI and they are simply spectacular. 40:1 kill ratios. This is the kind of plane that makes you wish as the Allies that you could control your own production.
