I was reading Sharks Thread about redesigning bases and I wanted to try it. Can anyone help me out here? Do I select the current base such as a resort and do I hit 'copy new'? or just new or what? Also how do I know what my building limit is?
Any adivice or a step by step would be really helpful!

Thanks

1. copy as new -> since the current design is already in use you cannot edit it and creating a new one entirely is to cumbersome

2. you can check the current limit in the upper part of the general designs screen for both ships and bases (bases not at a colony, these can be any size you want anytime)

3. you can also check this by looking at your current construction yard level, it will also give you this info

So I copy as new a mining base. I wanted to tinker with what shark did. Can I have one base that is both gas mining and mining?

Can I put tech modules on mining bases?

Yeah, you can either Copy or Upgrade. Upgrade automatically updates all components in the design to their latest class. Check it afterwards though, sometimes it won't be using the components you wished for if you have several of the same type( engine, generator, shields, etc.) and tech level. The nice thing about Upgrade is that it automatically obsoletes the last design and lets you modify the updated one( using Edit) before building any of that type of ship/base. Upgrade only works when you actually have new components to use, if you don't then you'll have to use Copy.

You can have both gas and mining components on the same base, but it's not much use since there are no minerals to mine on gas giants, and there is no gas to harvest on planets where you mine. Tech modules can indeed be put on mining bases, just be sure that the 'energy collection' field up on the right is higher than the 'static energy usage' field. Otherwise your base will burn fuel to operate, which is kind of pointless when you can use energy collectors.

I noticed that when I 'copy as new' after I hit save and go back to look at my design its not there. It did not save it. Am I missing something?

well, there is a filter up the designs page and this is set by default to show only newest designs....select all non-obsolete and check if it's there
