Planning map (Operationskarte) and Frontline-Date map.

Post by goranw »

Some gamers wanted a "Planning map".Perhaps this one could be used.
Names on towns and cities mostly from The German OKH Operationskarte Russland.
May-42. Blatt Nr.1+2 . Perhaps someone could make a Russian version?

Hi!
New version of the "planning map".
Added names to what looks as strategical hexes or along rails and also added names often mentioned in war literature.

That map is great. Isn't Berlin on the map as stated in the game's description?

Hi!
Of course Berlin is on the map in the game as stated.
The "planning map" is just a version, with German names
from a -42 operational map, on a part of the game map.

Newest version of the "planning map".
Added more names to what looks as strategical hexes or along rails.Less errors.
Am trying to have a consequent naming.

Hi!
About map modding.
Regarding the "planning map".
Latest version in playable form ( 63 tga-files )
Naming mainly after German Operationskarte Russland 1+2
Dated may-42.
Observe that the added names are not in the game engine.
Could be done scenariowise I guess if wanted.
I hope the down-load file is functional.

Hi!
Naming on a map like this is very difficult to do.
It was of course also so with the genuin game map.
It was long discussed how to get a consequent naming
and the result was an anglo-saxian view.
This in order to be "overall possible" and not
part of different country-orientated views.
Next problem was the spelling. This was also discussed as it was not a solved
problem by the first decision.

It would be possible to name this map in at least 3-5 ways.
This if you centrate around The Prussia, Baltics, Poland, West-Russia, Finland and Rumania
with their resp. language.
Many German maps have varying degrees of different naming on them.
The maps most consequently named are the German OKH- Operational maps.
They were mostly in scale 1: 1 000 000. ( So also in the Soviet + Soviet 1: 500 000).
Maps just before the war took more consideration to the local
country and its naming and spelling.
So also with big-scale maps ( ex 1: 50 000) as they were done
more often after taken original area maps. That was important during the war.
The most famous mapping was up to -39 done by Poland.
This was then used by especially the Germans during the war.
( As after the war by British and US mapping).
If you look at Nato-maps from the 50´s they have often German war maps of the Soviet
as a source.
My naming is after, as earlier said, The German Operational maps.
Although inconsequently so in the very eastern and western map parts.
Also so in Finland, The Baltics and Rumania.
Another problem with many names are that they very much differ in size.
Since they are not in the game engine you have no fact about that.
The smallest are the Bf.´s and thats small railway halts that were
by some reason of interest.
Perhaps you think that the font is too big but it must be readable also in zoom 3.

One conclusion finally is that this is the first war game with a map
that makes this sort of discussion relevant.

Works like a charm on the Road to Dnep scenario, GoranW. Just renamed the original folder and put yours in there!

Can't wait to put together a scenario for this map. Thanks again for your expertise on this. Much appreciated.
