What is the best way to effectively protect your air transport planes?

A transport AG on air drop
A figther AG on escort
Both at the same hieight?

Or is it better to put a long range fighter cap over the base you wish to perform the air drop on, and have the air drop AG fly by itself?

Thx
Christophe

I fly LRCAP as well as escort. I hate losing elite paratroopers while still in the planes.

I do the same whenever possible. I do not have hard evidence that escorting TR actually helps, but it seems logical to me.

Will fighters actually escort TR now? I don't recall them ever doing so in Witp.

Never having tried it a question does come to my mind, is it possible to fly transport or para drops at night? I'm guessing that it isn't and might well be considered gamey, but there are plenty of examples of these missions being conducted under cover of darkness for the very reason of not wanting to risk interception. (D-Day and airborne landings in Italy \ Sicily for eg).

Good question. Easy to find out. Look on the squadron display. See if you can air drop/trans at night mission. Probably will increase disruption to the ground unit(doesn't matter if hex undefended).

I just checked. You can't transport a paratrooper at night.

Do transports get shot down in the first place?
I haven't seen any case but I do transfer only in friendly territory.

Only defence against paradrops (and transport planes) are enemy CAP and LRCAP - defensive missions. What you need to protect your transport planes is to destroy enemy defensive missions and this could be done in two ways:
Sweep - sweep the base you are sending transports to to kill enemy CAP/LRCAP
Escort a bomber strike - escorts wont fly with transports (I presume) as it is not normal "strike package". So you have to send bombers escorted by fighters. While bombers will soften up enemy ground troops, fighters could deal with enemy CAP/LRCAP.

IIRC - this was how it functioned in WITP and I dont think developers messed with this.

Yes they get shot down. You just don´t see a combat replay or report.
There is just a message in the air transport phase like "transports flying to x intercepted"
and can view the results only in the intel screen.

They do get shot down by flak, if present. Order the paratroopers on Formosa to drop on Hong Kong. You'll get:

::Tina Destroyed by Flak
::Tina Destroyed by Flak
::Tina Destroyed by Flak
over and over

This all occurs during the air transport phase.

I've seen transports get intercepted.  You see it in the text box, same as with flak.

Not only do transports get intercepted (and can't be escorted) they can take heavy lose from flak too.

Best to have cleared out all CAP before para dropping - or have surprise, or luck. Or lots of paratroopers you don't mind risking.

Although, honestly I have never done careful testing to see how many troopers are disabled/destroyed in the plane when they are destroyed. Even were every plane destroyed, you can't know from the report whether that was before, after or during the drop. In addition, you have them shocking after the drop, further masking what is going on.

Best test would be to LRCAP a base with no defending LCUs and paradrop into it.

From what I have seen. Transports will get shot down, but it is not as brutal as was in WITP. And, depending of the strength of the enemy CAP they might just get turned away or some might get turned away and some will deliver the cargo. I find that sweeps are about the only way to deal with CAP or LRCAP but rarely try to fly transports into heavily defended bases. They are just to valuable.

Dropping paras on a base with heavy AA is not a very good idea.

Pity you can't drop paras a night. You should be able to but only with the risk of very high casualties and disruption.

You "can" drop mines at night. This is the only way to do it.....

Would be nice to recreate the Corregidor paradrop. Wait a minute, there's no hex for Corregidor. ;)
