It's funny the actual story about him & Lord Lovat as I thought it was just some British thing that they had bagpipers occasionally on to read his story.

I actually saw this gentleman, although he wasn't playing. At the Highland Games in Hinsdale, Illinois, in I think 1994, he was the pipe major for the massed bands (traditional closing ceremony; all the bands that are competing get together to close the games). It was a goose-bump situation to know he was the last piper to lead British troops in battle.

Bill Millin RIP

I was surprised at the reason the Germans gave for not shooting him - they thought he was mad and therefore he would have been a waste of a bullet! Did they honestly not realise that stirring pipes may have acted as encouragement to the troops? Strange.....
