I'm 35 (game) days into my first full WitP-AE campaign game (vs the Japanese AI).
I based my strategy upon the premise that I'd better avoid to risk my best assets in large, pitched battles against a qualitatively superior opponent while I'd better try to sink as many of his transports I can since, I presume, as soon as the Japanese Empire will find itself with no merchant navy to speak of, it'll be game over.

For now I managed to sink about 1.5 AK/AP/TK/etc ships per day but I wonder whether this is enough to cripple the Japanese war effort in the long run or it's only the equivalent of a flesh wound. Is the AI capable of outbuilding its historical counterpart when it comes to replace merchant losses?

Empire TK's are exceptional catches. relish each one, as they are very important to your enemy's war effort.

Dont worry too much about merchant attrition early, except as a function of your SC commerce raiding if you can bag a bunch at once. When your subs turn on in 43, they literally will melt away the enemy merchant fleet.

For me, it is not a matter of sinking X number of merchant ships, but a matter of what they were doing when I sank them.

Whatever project they were involved in (if any) has been disrupted. And the next project that they would otherwise have been used on will have to be cancelled or delayed.

I have sunk a number of Japanese merchant ships around the Gilbert Islands in the opening days of the war. This means that the Japanese ability to expand in that direction has been lessened or delayed.

I was sinking 30 ships a month in my game vs the AI. Lots of unescorted convoys. Vs an email opponent, you will be lucky to sink three a week in the first year of the war.

Thanks for the comments.
As a side note, the majority of my successes were due to the Dutch forces, especially the submarines, that are not handicapped by faulty torpedoes. Not to speak of the surface forces that were able to catch and maul a couple of unescorted amphibious TFs. Even Dutch AF had his share, although I suspect that using skip boming Catalinas in early '42 is a little gamey...

But now I am in deep trouble for other matters... I just lost USS Enterpise. Sunk while limping back to PH after being torpedoed by a Kate from Soryu!
At this stage I use my CVs only when I know the whereabouts of KB carries (BTW the AI split its carrier force into two three-carrier TFs) but I am not able to keep a fix on them. It seems that I suck at being stealth!

topeverest is right - by mid '43 you will notice a substantial lessening of the number of targets for your subs because they will have been mauling the merchies for months, and if you can add a "close" port for your subs (Attu is nice, Shanghai even better), they will be on station all the longer.
