People keep on warning me that pirates will steal your designs and that is terrible (for you) because your designs are superior to the AI...
but that is a wonderful thing (for you)!

instead of your weak ships fighting weak pirates and weak AI ships, your awesome ships will fight equally awesome pirates and weak AI.. not only would you have an advantage over the AI, the pirates would devastate the AI, since they are stronger.
However, the pirates would still steal designs from the AI empires... so even when facing pirates, you would have a high chance of encountering badly designed pirate ships, who are weak and easily destroyed. So on a 10v10 battle you would win handily...

I must concord and discord with you because of the following:

1:(BAD) When you are small and have just started the game there are a storm of pirates attacking you with the advanced ships of other empires.

2:(GOOD AND BAD) later they will be using you designs againt your enemies and you keep your hands clear but only applies to mercenary pirates.

So they are usefull,troblesome,and useless.

taltamir, I'm not sure how pirates could ever steal your designs since you always turn them!

I usually just ignore it completely. I only build destroyers early on since they're the only default design that can handle any pirates and monsters. When I get cruisers, I switch to them as my primary ship. I've never had real problems with pirates and usually leave their bases alone, unless they're in one of my systems or tick off one of my patrol ships.

As for the designs, I agree. Give the escorts and frigates a decent build so they give your enemies a hard time, but make sure your main patrol vessel is better, so it can take out a group of them.
