How aggressive was your commander? Last I heard if you get a less aggressive commander in that time frame the chance that you could run aground is half or even less. I also remember someone talking about their skill levels weren't very high either then the ability to run aground is higher. Basically it would simulate the training of new weapons systems, electronics, or tactics (like ADF navigation).

Knavey,

That is an amazing report.

I know it is better to give that receive, but in this case, I want to make an exception. Please keep that one locked in your garage. I have enough trouble with the enemy without that kind of disaster!

In all seriousness, I have neither seen nor experienced such a loss, though I have had convoy collisions that sunk a few ships.

You don´t know Knavey?

I guess I'm not familiar with him either. Is he some kind of troll that likes to post bogus issues with the game or something?

No, Knavey is no troll, not at all. He´s a very appreciated forum member that posts historical incidents and makes a "WITP combat report" out of them. Most times the results seem to be pretty much out of whack but they happened in real life.

No! He is on the forum infrequently, but certainly no troll. A long time ago on the WITP forum there was the usual bevy of "this game is broken because ________" posts. In response Knavey posted - tongue in cheek - a long list of outrageous results that he had encountered in his game. They were the sort of things people were screaming about as outrageously stupid, could never happen, etc.

Well, they had not actually happened in Knavey's game; they had all happened in real life in WWII! Every once in a while Knavey posts a little ditty of something that people would scream about if it happened in their game (because the game is obviously screwed up if that happens), but that something did actually did happen in real life.

They are classics to treasure.

It also can serve to remind us that when "OMG!!! this is totally unrealistic!!!" happens in the game, that totally unrealistic things happened in real life too.

I know of Knavey and get his jokes. I just finished reading a Naval History article that was talking about the Honda Point Disater just before I ran across this posting. The article was about how the Commodore of that Destroyer Squadron was trying to make himself look good after having some disaters during the fleet exercies. Plus he didn't know or didn't trust the new fangled Radio Direction Finding navigation methods that were being introduced in the fleet. Even when the navigator on his flagship told the Commodore that they were going too fast, when combined with mistrust of the RDF/ADF navigation method and the fact that cause of a storm/fog bank they couldn't get any navigation fixes it all combined to create the disater cause they didn't know where they were. In then end everyone ran lock step into the rocks only a couple of the captains of the destroyers weren't that sure of what was going on and actually chose to slow down before running to rocks like the rest of their squadron mates.
