Not Kaga for sure.
My bet is on Soryu, Shokaku class had those side towars alongside both edges near the middle and back of the ship.

Possibly the ship in the foreground is a AO? It looks like some kind of hose connection in the front

How do you guys learn this stuff? I know discrimination of WWII-era Imperial Japanese Navy fleet carriers isn't part of your job description... ;)

I know exactly what you mean. Before I started frequenting this forum, I thought I had quite some knowledge concerning these subjects.

It didn't take long before I realized my error ...

I`ll plump for Soryu too I think - the island is too far forward for Hiryu.

The bow is one deck too high for the Soryu.

Its a difficult picture to classify but i will go for Shokaku as Soryu has 2 sponsoons behind the island and this one does not have. Brady from where do you get these wonderful pictures ? I do not want to imagine what you have on your hard-disk.

Bridge looks too far forward for Soryu. Shokaku or Zuikaku.

Those towers, I think, are radio antennae, which, during flight ops would be lowered to clear the flight path.

I place my bet on Shokaku The bridge is correct. The Soryu's bridge widened slightly at top.

Soryu, it is

..................

The Image source offers up nothing, but after carefull examanation of the profiles in: Imperial Japanese Navy Aircraft Carriers 1921-45, Stille. I beleave it is almost certainly Soryu.

Well, I beg to differ. The bow rake looks much more a Shokaku's than Soryu

Cool Scans/Profiles, look at how the the bow has the curve at the tip and the number of suports for the forward end of the flight deck.

Yes, I did and I can hardly see the second support on your close-up. But look at the empty space shape between the flightdeck and the forecastle. It looks much more close to a Shokaku than to Soryu

Edit: Grammar

Were seeing the ship at an angle, notice how at the stern you can see the port and starbord flight deck suports, the same is true for the bow.

Well, I am sorry but I am not conviced at all . The photo shows a ship riding too high on the water to be Soryu. The empty spaces between the quarterdeck and flightdeck, on one hand, and between forecastle and flightdeck, on the other hand dont match Soryu's profile and look closer to Skokaku's. The island shape is as well, closer to Shokaku's (Delete the radar), and again, the forecastle shape is not at all like the unique Soryu's one.

I agree the photo angle does'nt help much for a quick ship's I.D. but I am confident with my bet : Soryu, it is not !

regards

Gilbert

PS-Should we continue on J-Aircraft forum ?

Perhaps this composite image will assist the debate. For my money this is 'a' Shokaku-class carrier rather than Soryu. Apart from the other reasons mentioned, I don't see enough freeboard at the bows for Soryu, nor do I see the pronounced sheer at the stem that is so characteristic of Soryu. Also, comparing aircraft sizes in the composite, this looks to me like a bigger carrier than Soryu.

Sorry, Brady, but I have to agree with Gilbert on this one!

Now, if it IS a Shokaku, who's going to stick their neck out on whether this is Shokaku or Zuikaku?

I’ve found a source which says that the photo was taken on 28th May, 1943. The Sôryû had been sunk the year before at Midway. So a Shôkaku may be the best candidate.

I think it's Shokaku too after looking at the pics, but they're both reefs now, so I'm not losing sleep over it.

Sorry Mr. Palmer, but the pics confirm Soryu, imho. Lots of technical reasons - flight deck overhang at bow and stern, deck 2 and 3 openings and length along the hull, % of spacing from the bow of the island, height to width ratio of the island. height of deck of the island, shape of stern, height and number of of decks under cover, and if ya get really gnarly about it, % ratio of an airframe to the island. Nope. Sorry, but this is Soryu.
