I have some recce planes with orders to recon the large LCU stack at Pegu. I still own the base. The planes have not flown. I'm checking my ops reports, no mention of the group reconing the objective. Is this because the group won't recon a friendly base? It has reconned other targets, like moulemien which is Japanese owned.

Perhaps the weather is bad in that hex?

It always is, but the planes haven't flown in days. I don't think they've ever recced Pegu.  I noticed this in WIPT, but I didn't think it would be a problem in AE. Has anyone noticed recce craft not reconning friendly bases, even when enemy troops are present?

If you have troops in the hex, a simple bombardment attack will give you better recon than any plane could. Just saying.

What is the size of the airfield the planes are reccing from?  Sometimes small airfields (ie size 1) find it difficult to preform recce missions.  Also a lack of HQ support & admin may effect ops

I've been running recon and naval search from size 1 airfields without trouble.  I think it is offensive missions that can't be performed from size 1 fields.

I have done recon using float planes from size 1 airfields , but never tried land based recce ? are you using land or sea based a/c ?

Yes, I have used inland level 1 airfields to recon flights. Recon mission is not offensive mission, so no airfield limitations.

Manual, page 167:

The following Missions will not be flown from airfields with a current size of 1:
»» Airfield Attack
»» Port Attack
»» Naval Attack
»» Ground Attack
»» (Fighter) Sweep
These airfields were too small to support these kinds of offensive Missions.

I don't think I've ever had luck reconning my own bases, either in witp or AE. I don't even try anymore.

My assumption is either that 1) DL of enemy units in my base is automatically maxed or 2) It just doesn't work.

It is pointless to recon your own bases anyway as I said above. Just do a little bombardment attack: 100% knowledge of what's there.

Not sure with your situation but in my game I found that the early war recon was pretty bad, as pilots gained exp and months went by recon was much much more relieable and accurate ...
good luck.. fow sux, expeipt for your enemy!

Recon has other benefits besides just showing what is in the hex.

As I understand it, the higher the detection level of the enemy units in the hex, the better your units will perform in combat. Keeping that DL up is a bonus for you.

Certainly affects bombing missions , not sure if it has any effect on ground combat
