I'm nicely into my 5th campaign start (re-start) against the AI and I am doing much better with matching the size of my transport ships to the ports where I want them to go.

However...

I sent a 10K tanker full of fuel to Christmas Island which is a Level 2 Port, and which is supposed to accept 12K worth of ships, but the port won't allow my tanker to dock. I get a message that the tanker exceeds the port capacity. There is nothing else docked at the port.

I've been able to send AKs and APs into other ports where the ships are barely under the port max and the AKs and APs can be docked, and even though sometimes the tonnage is listed in the "red" the ships still unload nicely.

I've even been able to get really small AKs with half-loads of fuel to dock and unload in Level 1 ports.

Is there something "special" that I'm supposed to do with tankers, such as having naval support in place? Or is this something particular about Christmas Island?

Have another look at the base display - you should see the port capacity listed as two numbers separated by a slash:

12,000/9,000 or 9,000/12,000 (I forget which order.)

The larger number is total tonnage (as you said), the smaller number is the largest ship that can be handled. So, in the example above you could have 50 x 5,000 tonne ships and they will all get their turn at the pier - eventually. But, a 10,000 tonne ship will never tie up.

It might get some unloading done via (abstracted) lighters, etc. but that will be very slow and some equipment is simply unable to unload that way. A tanker will probably take forever to unload (if it does).

Hope this helps.

PS: Having naval support always helps ships unload faster.

Ah, so that's the magic combination...

So until I find some sub-9K tankers it's back to sending out mini-AKs with fuel... Oh well.

(The more I micromanage, the less I enjoy... sigh!)

Thanks

Believe it or not, it gets easier. Once you get the hang of what ships fit. There were times I wanted to throw the keyboard out the window. Keep plugging away!

And for naval support, you need BF naval support, not HQ one. Shiny white admiral uniforms will never get dirty!

Load capacity of a vessel and tonnage are different things.
So if your '10k tanker full of fuel' means load it might still have a too high tonnage to dock (tonnage is the relevant number here). On the other hand the TKs and AOs I've noticed all had a higher load capacity than tonnage whereas AK seems to be the opposite. Maybe you can post a sreenshot.

Oooooo - I didn't realize that.....

So Base Forces provide Naval Support that helps to unload/load ships.

Do Port Services units provide the same sort of unloading/loading support?

So what kind of Naval Support do Naval HQs provide?

Yes, I have been speaking about tonnage.

And of course, build up the port just one more size...

So what kind of Naval Support do Naval HQs provide?

I think they provide rearming and/or repair support.

All Naval support are the same, no matter what kind of unit they may be in.

There is a bug in current code (fixed in next patch) that does not cound HQ Naval Support when the HQ is actually in the base. A whoops from the code that figures naval support application over the HQ radius.

Oh, okay, that's good. So I won't have to worry the differences once Patch 2 comes out. Great, thanks!

It is really why the small AKLs and tankers are so valuable. Don't leave home without them.

How did my dad use to say "your a gluttin for punishment". Starting again and looking at the turn one monster with Patch 2 on the horizon. You go guy!

I'm hoping to be able to upgrade my current game with Patch 2. If that doesn't work well I'll just do another re-start. I'm still learning WitP and so there are still plenty of things that I can improve in my early game. So the restarts aren't that bad because I do get to try out new ideas and correct old misconceptions.

I hear you. I probably should have done the same, but I'm too stubborn, and too much experience with restarts with WITP RHS
