Playing vs. AI, if you start at "Very Hard," changing after the game begins does not alter the difficulty? Is this correct?

You can change the difficulty any time you want during an AI game when you load from the main screen.

Swayin: nearest I can figure, there is no difference in the "intelligence" aspect of the artificial intelligence in historical vs. hard vs. very hard. The differences abound in consideration of resource, intelligence, production and (some) combat bonuses.

In my (currently suspended) game versus the IJ AI, I started at very hard and later changed to historical difficulty. However, there were still some residual effects from having the very hard setting for several months (e.g., lots of resources and oil stockpiled in the home islands). Those don't go away overnight and have to be "worked" through. These bonuses make the game 'more difficult' for the human player to overcome, but I'm not sure if that's what you're asking about when you say 'difficulty'.
