Hello

I experience a "problem?" when attempting to upgrade to another type of Aircraft.

I have Aircraft in the Pool, 31 000 Supplies at Base, a British Air HQ at the base (The Air Group I want to Upgrade is American, but attached to the British HQ) they are both located on a Australian Base. The Aircraft type I want to upgrade to is an "active" aircraft, currently flown by many other of my squadrons.

I have attempted to upgrade it for 20 days now in row...

Any Theories ?

What is the error message when you manually try to upgrade ? P 257 of the manual goes through the various checks.

Same problem in my game. British Squadron with Air HQ at base. Enough supply. It's impossible to upgrade. Don't know why.

Maybe bring it up in the tech support forum?

Well presumably the Air HQ should reduce the size of the base needed by at least one from 7 to 6....per page 258

Wonder if the HQ Command Radius Reduction Effect is actually working?

To upgrade , you have to have such conditions - 20 000 supplies and 7 level base nearby at plane maximum flight range.

Well, you see.. I could upgrade a British squadron there during the 21 days... but not the US Squadron during the same perriod ?

Maybe the British squadron was close enough (in terms of hops) to it's theater command HQ.

One thing to look at is, does the current sqdn have enough planes to upgrade ? I've seen quite a lot not being able to upgrade due to lack of planes.

Look at the top row in the upgrade pop up window, look for XXX needs 12/16 planes to upgrade.

I 'think' this is quite common for early allied plane groups to prevent the allies just magicing<sp> up new planes in singapore/DEI. Very common to have defensive air groups with lots of good pilots and v few planes. Not much you can do except get them to java and send tham back to india on ship to fight another day.

Rob - I've been able to upgrade squadrons with as few as 1 plane in the pool. That was a change to AE so you can upgrade a squadron, set replacements=ON and let it fill up as they become available.

I guess so. It should be the hops that count.

Gents;

It has been my experience that this is not universally applicable. Most follow this rule but not all. One squadron that does not follow this pattern is the B-18 squadron that starts in Alaska. It takes a full 16, very hard to come, by A-29s to get it to upgrade. Not sure why the A-29s are such a pain to come by but if you play with PDU off they will keep you flying B-18s into 1943.

All the best

I just remembered something - the current code is different for squadrons that are scheduled to withdraw. They do need a full squadrons worth of planes. IIRC they have changed that for patch 2.

This explains why I couldn't upgrade Claude squadrons at Truk and Kwajelein, the ones that are supposed to be withdrawn. I had to ship them back to HI to upgrade them.

Thx for this info.

Actually, the bug I'm referring to kept me from upgrading a squadron even when I sent them to Pearl Harbor. I just had to wait until a full squadron of planes was available.

Being able to upgrade a unit before withdraw does lead to a gamey trick where you upgrade a unit to an obsolete plane which only has a few in the pool and the unit goes poof with the old planes leaving you with newer aircraft.

I was trying to upgrade Claude to Zero, but unfortunately there is no difference between upgrade and downgrade, all the planes are the same.

Being able to tell the difference isn't all that simple.  One of those things a human brain can assess very quickly, but a computer would have to do a lot more work and might get the wrong answer.

I see. Unfortunately it has a really bad effect with regard to recon plane squadrons. Some produce very slowly. Some produce in such limited numbers that you don't get a squadron full.

I would rather trust my opponent to not cheat than be stuck with the limitation. YMMV.
