Good luck Scott. China can be a nightmare. I am in April in my PBEM and all I have left is Chungking and Sian. Japan's weak link seems to be tankers. Sink those boogers!

December 7th 1941, a date which will live in infamy the countries of Great Britain and the United States were suddenly and deliberately attacked by Naval and Air Forces of the Empire of Japan.

The Japanese attacked the Philippine Islands

The Japanese attacked the Hawaiian Islands

With Confidence in our Allied armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph over the evil Japanese.

The above speech was made during a session of congress. [8D]

A declaration of war exists between the United States and Great Britain against the Empire of Japan. [:-]

Reply from the Netherlands

The Kingdom considers itself at war with Japan because the aggression which aims at the peace loving nations one after the other, can, must, and will only be resisted in firm alliance. Now that the friendly American and British peoples are being attacked, the Kingdom of the Netherlands puts all its military power and all its resources at the disposal of the common war effort. The Netherlands did not hesitate to defend themselves with courage when they were wickedly assaulted in Europe. [:-]

Saki for Samurai!!!!!!!!

Post by stldiver »

Cpt Kaku Tomeo commander of the CV Hiryu paces the bridge. The last of his planes has safely lifted off from the flight deck headed towards Pearl. Thier mission destruction of the American fleet at Pearl, all planes were to hit the harbor, with Zero's strafing the airfield!! The ships were the number one priority.

He did not have a good nights sleep, his dreamed he was commander of the allied forces and had defeated the entire KB then swept across the pacific, landing on Okinawa in 1942, forcing the strangulation and capitulation. That was a bad dream something echoed in his mind WITP, he was not sure what the dream meant maybe a glourious victory in an alternate self.
tm.asp?m=1922068

Kaku did know what he was here and now, a Samurai Captain and he just sent his warriors off to deliver the first blow of the war. The capitalist nations had strangled his country for far to long, with their unwarrented demands and greed! It was time to teach the infidels their lesson!

Hours later Kaku watches as the last flights land on the deck, all his planes return. The pilots talking of glorius victories, 2 Battleships sunk Pensylvania and California the rest badly damaged. No signs of the American CV's, they will get their day. Only 3 planes were lost, many damaged but a great victory!

Cpt Watanabe, Seishichi Gazes out into the rain, The CA Chokai and 5 DD's were headed to the Phillipines to bombard the shores in preperation for the unleashing of the Japanese forces on the weak American's. Total surprise was expected on the Americans and British. Suddenly the lead destroyer begins to turn and signal, 3 British DD's are spotted heading south almost the same course. Cpt Watanabe orders all ships to engage, the battle is fierce and the British Destroyers are very experianced, but they all eventually go down, several of his destoryers need repairs and are split off. Cpt Watanabe is disturbed, How were the British alerted to the Japanese attack, something must have gone wrong, this will make it harder to secure the DEI.

But the main damaged had already been down. 45 Zero's and over 100 level bombers had swept away opposition and decimated Manila harbor, no less then 12 submarines had been seen with their belly side up, Complete surprise was achieved. Such great results will definatly be repeated in the coming days!

HQ Combined Fleet Hiroshima
ADM Yamamoto, Isoroku listens to the reports coming in. It was a great success across the Pacific for the 1st day of the Rising Sun
in the east Pearl had been decimated and Makin captured, and Guam invaded.

In the Phillipines surprise at Manila achieved the sinking of 12 submarines as well as 1 DD and 3 PT's this will ease his mind over somes fear of a submarine menace.

THe landings at Malaya have gones as scheduled with Patani and Kota Bharu invaded. But thier was disquiet. Plans must have been leaked. The British had evactuated Hong Kong with all transports and 3 DD's escaping south, luckily the DD's stumbled into the CA CHokais TF and are no more, we must destroy the transports also.

The most disconcerning news is the Prince of Wales and Repulse headed south away from a planned for ambush! How had the British know, they had only been at war with China. Spies it must be Spies. There was no need to ponder this, time to plan the next days events.
The Samurais must strike while the Katana is sharp!

Below is Hiryu Cpt Kaku, Tomeo ship
p.s. This is a joint AAR like the last one when I was allied and Scott Japan, There was not port restriction as there was none in the initial game, scott also hit manila but no with this much success he split airfield and port, where I concentrated just port in both Harbors.

3 sakis for Pearl

Post by stldiver »

Dec 9th and 10th 1942.

Dec 9th had passed relatively quiet compared to the last few days, the last of the british ships fleeing Hong Kong were sunk. Landings in the North of the Phillipines had begun. Khota Bharu, Guam raised the flag of the rising sun! Most of the airforce was stood down to rest. The KB had withdrawn from Pearl to rest its planes for the moment.......

Dec 10th 1942 The 3rd strike of Pearl.
Cpt Kaku watched again as his planes lifted off to attack Pearl, the Admiral wanted more then 4 Battleships. Losses had been light the last two strikes and with a day of rest his Samurais were ready, unfortunatly so were the allies. Shortly after launch sirens are sounded incoming planes, His spotters notice close to 40 fighters escorting 10 divebombers (he thinks why did they move in so close, 1-1000 lb bomb would make all this worthless).

Only 10 Zeros respond immediatly to the initial attack, but soon they are slicing thru the incoming enemy planes, as the battle rages soon others join up and eventually break thru to the bombers, splashing some and chasing the rest home.

That is not the end, as the drone of large heavy bombers can be heard, these also are attacked with less success. One of the biggest bombers goes down a victory, they release their loads to no avail.

Kaku smiles at his Samurais of the sky they have withstood the first test of defense!

Top Secret Meeting

Post by scott64 »

A Frozen far away place.

He walks into the top secret room. "Gentleman, we have a problem."
"Don't we know that!" exclaimed thegreatwent.
"How can we overcome all those ship sinkings?" asked Feurer Krieg.
"Our industry is on the verge of excellence." assured the masked one.
"Please enlighten us."
"As we speak, the industry is gearing up for mass production. Air planes, ships, bombs, and mines."
"But our toll is great so far over a few battleships and some cruiser are still around." interjected General Goodies.
"We still have our carriers." said thegreatwent.
"Yeah, right, only 2." [:o]

KB finds some prey

Post by stldiver »

Dec 13th 1941,

The scout planes had sighted the ships, they were spotted the day before heading towards Palmyra so the KB took
a detour to investigate. After sighting two ships a launch was issued.

The Val sights the targets below, 2 allied ships one appears to be a cruiser another some type of luxury liner.

With a wiggle of the wings to indicate the target each plane begins to make its dive in well cordinated fashion honed over the
last few days. In the meantime the Kates begin to head low to line up their targets

History fact of SS President Coolidge

Built in 1931 by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co, Newport News, VA. Operated prior to World War 11 by American President Lines. Launched 21st February 1931, Trialed and delivered to owners 1st October 1931.
This luxury liner had been in regular commercial trans-pacific services before World War 11, being occasionally used by the War Department on a part-voyage basis. Her first voyage for the army began at San Francisco on 15th July 1941 and took her to Honolulu and Manila. After return in late August the ship again left San Francisco, in early September, for Honolulu and Manila. On 1st of November the PRESIDENT COOLIDGE once more sailed from the Golden Gate for the same destinations, and was en route home, midway between Manila and Honolulu, when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor occured. She reached San Francisco on Christmas Day 1941.

In early 1942 the ship was hastily adapted for carrying large numbers of troops and at once began service to the Southwest Pacific. On 12 January she left for Melbourne and Wellington, returning to San Franscisco on 7 March. Next departing on 19 March the vessel again visited Melbourne and Bora Bora. Return to San Francisco was on 8 May and departure on the 26th took her to the Fiji Islands, Auckland and Suva.

The PRESIDENT COOLIDGE returned to San Francisco on 29 August and on 6 October sailed for New Caledonia and Espiritu Santo. On 26 October 1942, she struck an American mine in the east entrance of the Segond Channel at Espiritu Santo and sank in 20 fathoms of water. Nearly all of the 5,000 officers and men on board were saved.\

Manila harbor still holds shipping!

Post by stldiver »

Dec 14th,

The 19 Sally bombers fly over Manila harbor, it has been a few days since it has been struck. With no escorts these bombers are worried about the P-40's that had been defending the harbor. Fortunatly for them the zero sweeps leave empty skies, and they are rewarded with still more shipping to be sunk.

After the Sally's bank away they notice another submarine show belly side up.

Morning Air attack on Manila , at 79,77

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 6,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 23 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 19

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-IIa Sally: 6 damaged

Allied Ships
SS Pickerel, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk
DD Peary, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
SS Searaven, Bomb hits 1, heavy damage
AO Pecos, Bomb hits 1
SS S-40, Bomb hits 1

Allied ground losses:
5 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Port supply hits 1

History Fact
Mitsubishi Ki-21 "Sally"

Most important Japanese army bomber, in production up to 1944. Codenamed Sally. Served in every theatre where the Japanese army was engaged.

Already obsolete at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, the Ki-21 Type 97 heavy bomber (Allied code name 'Sally') remained the backbone of the Japanese Army Air Force's bomber squadrons throughout the war. The 'Sally' entered service in 1937 and was used against Soviet forces in Manchuria in 1939 and against the Chinese in the lengthy Japanese warfare in China. The 'Sally' flew against U.S. forces in the South Pacific, but by the end of the war the plane was employed primarily as a transport.

On May 24, 1945, seven Sallies flew from Japan to land at an American-held airfield on Okinawa; five were shot down, but the two survivors crash-landed at Yontan airfield, and the twelve commandos from the planes destroyed seven U.S. aircraft, fuel drums, and an ammunition dump before being killed by defending U.S. Marines. At the war's end the 'Sally' joined other Japanese aircraft that were painted white with green crosses to carry VIPs negotiating the Japanese surrender. The 'Sally' thus had the distinction of being in Japanese Army service longer than any other combat aircraft.

A Mitsubishi design, the 'Sally' was developed as a heavy bomber to strike targets in the Soviet Far East. The prototype flew in 1937. The design was accepted, but it was reengineer and was continually refined (by Nakajima as well as Mitsubishi) to increase the bomb load and defensive armament. The improved Ki-21-II was the definitive variant, with the IIb sub-series introducing a dorsal gun turret (in place of the "greenhouse"; see below). A further improvement (Ki-21-III) was rejecting in favour of the Ki-67 'Peggy'. Production of the 'Sally' continued until Sept. 1944 with 2,064 aircraft being produced.

Below are the Sally bombers inbound to Manila, hmm pretty tall mountains in Phillipines [:D]

Lockdown at Manila

Post by stldiver »

Dec 16th 1942,

3 Japanese destroyers take position outside the entrance to Manila harbor, thier mission try and intercept Japanese shipping that flees.
They had just arrived this evening replacing 4 destroyers that had engaged 6 minesweepers trying to escape the night before only 2 made it past. This operation had been going on since the start of the war, usually 4 unit DD squardrons would patrol in front of the harbor with backup along the coast in case of escapies.

The PT boats had tried on over 8 occasions to escape past the ships to get at the transports and had failed every time sometimes with a loss of one or two others just forced to return after firing torpedoes.

Tonight would be more rewarding for the newly arived ships, tonight transports and PT boats were making a rush, The night sky is almost black and the destoyers finally spot the transports barly 5000 yards away, then they unleash carnage.

Once again the Japanese navy rules the waves.

Historical Fact...
Shiratsuyu was the lead ship of her class of destroyers in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Her name means "Shimmering Dew" (White Dew).

On 15 June 1944, Shiratsuyu was escorting 1st Supply Force from Davao. She was sunk in a collision with the tanker Seiyo Maru 90 miles (165 km) southeast of Surigao Strait (09?‹09?ŒN 126?‹51?ŒE / 9.15?‹N 126.85?‹E / 9.15; 126.85), after which her depth charges exploded among survivors

Top Secret place somewhere not within the War Theater. [:'(]

"I give you Operation Chili"
"Just what exactly is Operation Chili?" asked thegreatwent.
"Well. First you brown the beef. We will substitute rice for the beef. Then we cook the beans. Again substituting the beans for rice. We mix those together with secret sauce, err saki. Heat over a roaring fire. Best served when mixed with aviation fuel and gasoline and then lighting a match and see how high the flame goes."
" " exclaimed the masked one.

Emporer calls for update

Post by stldiver »

Dec 22nd 1941,

The Emporer looks at Tojo and Yamamoto with their Generals behind them. The room is filled is quiet as the Emporer speaks.

Emporer "The capitalist countries forced us into this war, I wish an update of our situation. The people need to know how our forces are spreading the new Co-prosperity sphere! Give me an update by each theatre"

Tojo bows and begins.

"Sir in China we have cleared most of the guerillas from behind our lines and have cleared the railroads. In the north the chinese have pulled back and we are following. In Central china we have pushed some enemy corps back, and we pulled back from Ichang. The chinese have moved into Sinyang and we are currently trying to push them out. 3 divisions moved to within 40 miles of Changsa and pushed 3 corps back into Changsa, the bombing of the airfield at Changsa began today. In Southern China we crossed in from Vietnam and have just pushed the Chinese out of Nanning. Hong Kong has been captured with all resources intact"

The Emporer nods at Tojo "Very good, you seem to have made more progress in the last 16 days then the last year. What about Malaya?"

Tojo "We have just captured Alor Star and pushed the British out, we will continue down that rail line. Also the landings at Kota Bharu have been pushing the British back and now are close to Temloh. In addition we have just landed troops at Mersing and pushed a small unit out. We hope to have Singapore surrounded in the next 2 weeks. The daily bombing of Singapore begins today."

Once again the Emporer is pleased "Continue with Phillipines and DEI"

Tojo "We have taken almost all of Northern Borneo and it will be all secured in the next few days, In south DEI we have just captured Ambon, and hold Ternate and Sorong. We currently have landed at Manado though the Dutch have withheld our first assault, they should soon fall."

Tojo "In the Phillipines we have pushed the enemy from the North and South, we are at the outskirts of Clark and are a week away from Manila from the south, We hope to have this finished in 3 weeks, the bombing of Clark field begins today"

The Emporer grimaces "I would like you to accelerate your plans, we need no delays" he then looks at Yamamoto "Tell me about the navy and airforce, what have they been doing"

Yamamoto "The navy has driven all before them, the enemy does not even come out to engage us for fear of our strength. The attack at Pearl Harbor and Manila was an extreme success. We have sunk 6 battleships, 5 Cruisers and 2 light cruisers as well as 12 destroyers, in addition over 22 submarines have been destroyed, our merchant fleet has no fears.

We have taken Wake, Makin, Ocean islands and we are searching for the enemy carriers"

Emporer "What of our losses?"

Yamamoto "Sir the enemy runs from us the only losses so far are 5 miget submarines, several Patrol craft and several transports lost from shore gunfire. The small KB has swept up to Java and sank several ships and the KB is hunting but the enemy refuses to engage. We have also just secured Rabaul, Lae and are looking for further expansion all is going acording to plan'

Yamamoto "We rule the skies, we have destroyed over 470 enemy planes and only lost 318 of our own. Most of those from accidents as the enemy cannot stand long vs our airforce"

Emporer "Samurais you have done well, but we expect more. Accelerate your timetables, even though you have won great victories we must push the enemy till the coward comes out to fight. If he withdraws take all he gives. The Japanese people deserve what is rightfully ours!"

Yamamoto and Tojo bow again and back out with their subordinates.

TF 53 encounters mine field at Merak (48,97)

Japanese Ships
SS I-156, Mine hits 2, on fire, heavy damage Sinks 1st sub lost not those minisubs

Historical Fact.
31 March 1929:
The 1-56 is completed at the Kure Navy Yard, commissioned in the IJN and based in the Kure Naval District.

7 December 1941:
The I-56 sights and attacks a Dutch submarine (probably LtCdr Henri C. Besançon's K-XVII) off the east coast of Malaya, but misses.

11 December 1942:
The I-56 shells and sinks the 1,186-ton Norwegian merchant HAI TUNG that was en route from Bangkok, Siam (now Thailand) with a cargo of rice and general supplies for Singapore at 05-08N, 104-32E with all of her 50-man crew.
5 January 1942:
Indian Ocean, S of Java. The I-56 shells and sinks the 2,626-ton British freighter KWANGTUNG.

6 January 1942:
40 miles S of Tjilatjap. Early in the morning, the I-56 surfaces and shells the 8,169-ton Dutch merchant TANIMBAR. The TANIMBAR fires back and Ohashi dives to escape damage.

8 January 1942:
In the afternoon, the I-56 sinks the 3,000-ton Dutch merchant VAN REES. In the evening, the I-56 shells and sinks the 2,263-ton Dutch merchant VAN RIEBEECK at 08-11S, 108-47E. 13 seamen are killed.

12 January 1942:
Off Bali. In the afternoon, the I-56 fires a torpedo at the 2,065-ton Dutch merchant PATRAS that is en route from Surabaya to Tandjong Priok. The PATRAS' skipper spots and manages to dodge the torpedo. LtCdr Ohashi surfaces and opens fires with his deck gun. The PATRAS tries to outrun the sub at her maximum speed of 13 knots, but is hit several times in the stern and a fire starts.

Suddenly, a Dutch Dornier Do-24K patrol plane appears. Ohashi crash-dives, but the plane had no depth charges. After the Dornier departs, the I-56 again surfaces and fires two fragmentation shells at the PATRAS as she approaches the harbor at Banjoewangi. The damage to the PATRAS is minor, no one is killed, but some crewmen are wounded.

4 February 1942:
Indian Ocean, near Koepang, Timor. The I-56 shells and damages the 979-ton Dutch merchant TOGIAN that is sailing with convoy JS.1 bound for Singapore that departed Colombo the previous day. The TOGIAN is later scuttled at Koepang.

26 May 1943:
The evacuation from Kiska to Paramushiro Island, Kuriles via submarines begins.

May-August 1945:
The I-156 is configured to carry two "kaiten" human-torpedoes. She makes three transport runs carrying kaitens from Ozushima to shore bases along the Kyushu coast.

15 August 1945:
Tokyo. The Emperor Hirohito (Showa) broadcasts an Imperial Rescript that calls for an end to the hostilities and the war.

2 September 1945:
The I-156 is surrendered.

30 November 1945:
Removed from the Navy List.

1 April 1946: Operation "Roads End":
The I-156 is stripped of all usable equipment and material and towed from Sasebo to an area off Goto Retto by the submarine tender USS NEREUS (AS- 17). The NEREUS scuttles the I-156 by gunfire at 32-37N, 129-17E.
