Has there been a list of Scenarios released or discussed yet?

Notes say "6 new scenarios, including a new grand campaign."

I've also heard of the 2nd grand campaign scenario which gives Japan some supply/logistical bonuses of some sort. I've also seen the Guadalcanal scenario AARs. Terminus is talking about a Downfall scenario as well. So that's four total, unless I've assumed incorrectly.

What are the other two, and/or could we get an official list yet?

thanks!

There's been a list released about 300 times by now, but why not? One more...

1): Grand Campaign (the scenario 15 we know today, start 12/7/41)
2): GC with a little Jap help (more units, more resources)
3): Coral Sea
4): Guadalcanal
5): Aleutians
6): Grand Campaign -1 (starts 12/8/41)
7): Operation Downfall (in production for release with a patch)

Woo Hoo! for 6). I'm glad you decided to include a "day after" scenario. Last time I saw, this wasn't included.

I love the scenario that starts in April 1942 and goes until the end of the war. When do you think that will be available? It's my favorite!

I wouldn't hold my breath, Indy. It was one thing to do a 12/8 scenario, but presenting a 4/42 scenario with an OOB that's up to AE standards is something else entirely.

I am sorry to hear that. I was hoping we could modify the WITP scenario and go from there!

That would be the starting point, sure, but where have all the different units moved to in those intervening months? The sources are VERY weak for that sort of information.

I understand. I just love building up to the big battles in May and June 1942.

I think you may have missed one. I thought Scen 7 was a Dec 8 start version of Scen 2?

No, that didn't make the final cut.

Hmm, I don't see either a North Africa Campaign, or a Russian Front. Or are you working on that now T ?

When you get the chance:

My favorite scenarios to play are the May 42-1946 and August 42-1946 because those have in place the intitial conditions that are difficult to recreate. If I start the 12/8 scenario (my next favorite in line) by mid 1942 things are far from the historical situation at that date.

It's always possible to create these scenarios as a mod. It wouldn't be all that difficult to do, though probably take a bit of time to get all the units in the right places.

Are we likely to see some more NikMod Scenarios ? I've enjoyed playing those both in Stock and on Andrew's Map. I particularly enjoyed the 42,43 and 44 starts.

That's for Nik to decide. Nothing to do with the "real" scenarios, even though Nik's a member of the team.

Isn't that the point? To prove to yourself, your opponent or whoever that you could do better...

Personally given the choice of taking out the Japanese carriers in the Coral Sea (where you can arrange to have some land based air assistance) or in some very risky mid ocean encounter (Midway), I'd go for the former every time.

No, the point is that if we have a 4/42 scenario, then the OOB MUST be correct. It's one thing to know that such-and-such island had been occupied by the Japs at this point, but which troops were there at scenario start? That's where it falls down.

Sorry mate, you missed my point. I agree that if you have any scenario starting at x date, it must be fully accurate, or it is not an historical scenario.

My point was that if you start on Dec 7 or Dec 8 or at any other point, why complain about the lack of historically accuracy at some future point in THAT scenario, after all you are trying to do it better (as well as reacting to different events). If you enter into a scenario with a view that you will follow history - why? What have you gained? You may as well just read a book on the subject and leave it at that.

True. A lot is known about the OOB for both sides on Dec 7, 1941 and even there we had gray areas that took research. I have seen a number of fairly comprehensive OOBs for 12/7/41, but nothing as detailed for any point after that.

Better data is available for the Allied unit locations than the Japanese. A lot of records were lost at the end of the war and among those records that survived, only a few were ever translated into English (or any other language).

For a mod scenario, it would be up to the modder to decide how nit picking accurate he wanted to be with the unit locations. If the goal is to get something accurate in the major details and only approximate the lesser details, it could be done reasonably quickly. For example, for a 6/42 start the locations of most IJN warships are well known. Most US air units are also well known. US and I would guess British land units can be found out reasonably easy. IJA specifics would take a bit more work, but the critical units (like what was on the front lines in New Guinea) are fairly well known. It would probably be tougher to come up with what was where in China at that point in time. Air units in SE Asia, Australia, and all US controlled locations would be easy to dig up.

The locations of all the merchant ships would be virtually impossible, though some specifics could be found. A lot of unit locations inside Japan's empire would also be difficult.

It boils down to how many nits do you want to pick. The accuracy bar for an official AE scenario is quite high and I wouldn't recommend this for an official scenario. If players were content with something in the middle between the original game scenarios and the AE standard, it could be done without too massive an effort. The actual turn around time needed would depend on how many people were digging information out of reference materials and how many people are willing to do data entry. If you're content with not worrying about the exact location of the more minor details, than that saves a lot of time.

Bill

Cool, though I liked the 43 and 44 scenarios in WITP as well, being an AFB who likes to play with his Hellcats, Corsairs, P-47's, Essex CV's, etc without having to wait forever to get them.

All the more incentive for me to play more turns/day in AE

Any chance of a small-sized Midway or Marianas scenario? How about the old "Rising Sun" scenario from WitP? I'll bet that was a lot of people's introduction to playing Japan.

Not inconceivable, but not yet. Some poor sucker has to volunteer from the team to make it happen, and the current poor sucker (me) is busy...

Perhaps a bit easier to manage "What if" might be a modified GC with additional US forces in the Philippines - reflecting a change of US policy toward the Philippines and Japan a bit earlier than what actually happened.

I sense a volunteer. And one that certainly has the ability to do a great job of it....
