The expectations are very high for this production, which is the most expensive miniseries ever. Like "Band of Brothers", there aren't any big-ticket stars in the cast. I've seen many photos of the filming in progress, and they've take pains to show the changes in uniforms/weapons of the USMC from 1942-1945.
As a disclaimer, this series focuses on the battles of the 1st Marine Division (Guadalcanal-New Britain-Peleliu-Okinawa). It is NOT an all-inclusive portrayal of the Pacific War. Two of the three main characters portrayed (Robert Leckie and Eugene Sledge) joined the Marines AFTER Pearl Harbor. John Basilone, the third principal character, is a special case. He served in the US Army in the mid-thirties, and then signed up for the Marines in July 1940.
The one thing that "BoB" lacked was in development of the main characters, as there were so many. "The Pacific" will give us a closer look at three men. Given the horrific nature of Pacific ground combat, a balanced "humanistic" look should prevent the series from becoming a blood-soaked gorefest.
