Hi there! I'm hoping to weasel my way into graduate school for military history in Fall of 2010, and for my sample essay, I'm going to be writing on the Indian Ocean Raid against Ceylon in April of 1942. I have The Most Dangerous Moment, The Somerville Papers, Bloody Shambles, Carrier Observer, the relevant volumes of the British Official Histories, Midway: the Battle that Doomed Japan (which has a little bit on Ceylon), and some more general secondary sources. I've also ordered a number of documents from the PRO: the relevant battle summary (15), the reports on the loss of Hermes, Dorsetshire, Norfolk, and Vampire, the RAF summary of the action, and some other similar stuff.

Does anyone have any further recommendations for source material?

You could try to look also for some FAA books. There were 803rd and 806th FAA squadrons and 273rd RAF squadron has some FAA pilots too. (But i think their actions are also covered in Bloody Shambles 2)

For me, one of the "bibles" of WW2 carrier ops in the Pacific (and Indian Oceans) is still an oldie called TITANS OF THE SEAS by the Belotes..

Yup, got that one.

I wish I spoke---or more usefully, read---Japanese. I bet there's a lot in that language that hasn't percolated over here.

Unfortunately, he lives up to it sometimes.

H.P.Willmott has a chapter or two on the raid in "Empires in the Balance". Might be useful to check out what Churchill, Brooke etc has to say about it also. Looking at the official US histories might give an idea how the event was perceived there (if at all) - what's left out is as important as what's not.

I do have Wilmott, Churchill, and Brooke's unexpurgated diaries, too. Don't have Morison.

Toland's books might be of intrest.."But Not in Shame: The Six Months After Pearl Harbor."  I've had this since i was 10.  Good read for the first 6 months of the war.  Biased on the US side, but still good background info.  And "The Rising Sun: The Decline and Fall of the Japanese Empire" ..  Also, i think the folks on this forum are quotable too.  Hell, if we put our heads together, we could put together the best darn multi-volume set on the Pac war out there...  However some people would need to be edited more then others..
