Doublecross: Allied Perspective

Post by Chocolino »

This is a 2 player V1.3 PBEM. (the rematch of Crossroads)

We play the following rules:

1) All countries get normal PP
2) No house rules, everything the game allows is ok. (I don't use PP transfer via F1 as a personal choice)
3) All neutral countries stay under AI control regardless of alignment. As soon as a neutral country is attacked, it will be taken over by the defending player. Players also take over if events cause a country to enter the war. Two exceptions:
- Italy starts human controlled by the Axis player
- The USSR (but not the USA) can be taken over by the Allied player as soon as he wants to start an active war

Even though it did not come as a complete surprise, the Polish army is shocked and overwhelmed by a German surprise attack. When deciding if to focus on the defense of Warsaw and pull all units back or to encircle a German tank corps, we do the latter.

Poland is steamrolled, the German tank corps survives and Warsaw looks awfully undefended.

Even though we could damage the tank corps earlier and cause some additional repair PP spending for the German army, as a result we will loose the Polish campaign very likely a turn earlier than would have been possible. That will cost France one turn of income and preparedness for its defense - if that is the course the Axis commander plans the coming month. The German army is off to a successful start.

The French and British commands are very disappointed and worried about the conduct of the Polish Campaign. Their readiness is still low despite being officially in a war for 6 weeks now. They hope the German leadership has different goals than France for the immediate future but this hope is very slim indeed. They urge Russia to enter the war and relief the West with a campaign of their own. But all the USSR agrees to is a diversionary attack on Estonia that will have little effect on Germany.

The French have frozen defenses but add a Infantry corps near Metz to stiffen the line there. Eastern Poland is occupied as agreed with the Germans beforehand.

Now that the minimal risk that the Polish navy was posing in the Baltic is gone, Germany occupies Copenhagen and with it owns Denmark.

There is a steady build-up of German forces near the Luxembourgh/Belgian border. A German attack is imminent. The French did not have enough time to build anything substantial and the BEF is somehow feeling lonely as well in big France.

The Russian siege of Tallinn is unsuccessful and will require the presence of the Russian air force for support. Since we don't have any air force at present, headquarters put in a requisition request.

We conduct a diversionary landing in Kiel and will see for how long we can hold out. The German is way ahead of a desirable time table and we need to be creative to slow things down a bit. Units at the Belgium border look ready to strike at any moment.

Our beachhead in Kiel is still in good shape and a few German defenders showed themselves. But the landing in Kiel has caused no delay whatsoever and hence failed to achieve its goal. German units pour into France and Belgium. Brussels falls before the Allied commander can take control. This will lead to poor French morale in the next turn and we will be in a rough position. Furthermore, all French units are still frozen in our turn and cannot react with the exception of the few newly purchased ones. The Netherlands is still neutral but is looking over its shoulder.

In the Baltic, the Russians make again no progress after a failed siege of Tallinn.

The morale in France has never been lower. The fast German attack has caught the French defenders in their sleep. Most are out of action before their commanders have a chance to issue a single order. Lille is lost and we try to fall back on Paris with what we have. Kiel is still holding but the Russian campaign is progressing very slugglishly.

After the fast attack and the early losses, the French don't have the strength any more to build up any cohesive defense. We did not expect to hold France but wanted to make it a much longer affair. Soon, Great Britain is in peril since equally unprepared for an early attack.

LeHavre falls and the Axis works on reducing the Paris pocket. Amsterdam, Metz and Marseille are still alive. The Spanish could not resist again joining the tempting Axis side. The fortress of Gibraltar is getting ready for defensive action. After occupying Riga, the USSR declares war on Lithuania.

Expediently, the German Heer goes about its business to conquer France. Our resistance has almost crumpled and is concentrated on pockets around the VP cities Paris, Metz and Marseilles. No Spanish are visible near Gibraltar yet and we hope to occupy the Germans for a few more turns before they can join.

This Axis is on an accelerated time table. Italy has joined already, much earlier than anticipated and the opponents face each other in the desert. Still no threat to Gibraltar. The Italian Navy seems to be doing a better job raiding convoys than the combined French and British do in the Med. (We have to switch supply for Gibraltar to the Atlantic route which we should have done in from the beginning). But no sea battles yet that we could detect.

Paris falls this turn and we plan to reject the Vichy offer since we need to occupy the German a bit longer in France. Metz and Marseilles are the remaining strongholds of the free world in France.

France tries to hold on for as long as it can. We split the British resources between homeland security and the desert. Once the siege in Gibraltar becomes more effective, we may also have to invest in leveling up the reduced garrison.

No problems in Gibraltar yet and small but important portions of France hang still on. There is very little activity in the oceans. Even the Italian fleet in the Med does not enter open sea battles.

The Axis is still occupied in France, at Gibraltar in the North African desert and is probably planning either an attack on England or a campaign through the Balkans. Since the overall situation is most worrisome, urgent help is requested from the USSR. Much of their mobile force is still in Finland but they decide to try an ad-hoc preemptive strike against the Axis. The USSR declares war on Romania (less costly than Germany but with the same effect) and move westwards. We did not plan for this - it is entirely opportunistic. If we had planned it, we would not have started the Finish campaign earlier. Since our units are not very mobile, we hope we can gain enough momentum before the German can react.

The board is on fire and campaigns are fought in many locations.

Only a few German defenders make an appearance in East Prussia while the stronger Axis units continue to fight where they are. The German commander keeps his nerve, I salute him. Marseilles will hold only a few more turns given the strength of the attackers. The UK in Gibraltar needs to level up the siege losses on a routine basis now but holds.
