A valid concern

Post by Lützow »

While you're still working on AE, can you test it on Windows 7 Beta as well, please.

One thing which came on my mind is, that by next year pc's most certainly will get delivered with MS upcoming OS. There probably won't be a similiar support for Vista, as it was with XP before and I wouldn't like it if WitP AE don't run with Win 7. I guess it's safe to say, that at least for the near future nobody will develop such a detailed simulation of pacific war anymore, so we have to deal with for a long time.

I second the request... please conduct tests on Windows 7, even if all we have right now is pre-release versions. Also, if possible, please test on the 64-bit version. I know it is not common, but for us who use 64-bit systems, it is somewhat important.

Thanks!

Windows 7 is not very different from Vista in terms of it's kernel, use of DX10, etc. There will be few things, I understand, that will work on Vista but not W7.

I have noticed these irritating delays in Vista when running Witp in windowed mode under Vista, when switching from another application to Witp. Nothing to write home about, but I can't figure out why. Changing the compatibility mode doesn't seem to make a difference.

WitP basically runs fine in Vista. Just the task switching thing I noted above. Not to worry.

I don't know about you, but it doesn't run fine on my Vista 64 machine. I have a 4 Meg Vista 64, with a quad core processor and it runs very slow compared to my old XP dual core with 2 Meg. The graphics have tons of glitches too where I cannot read any reports. I posted on it earlier and someone said it was a Direct X 10 thing, but nothing fixed it including the current patch.

All concerned, I'm going to try it very soon on the RC version of Win 7 64 bit.

On the other hand it was just announced by MS on Friday that they will release XP Module for Win 7, which like a Virtual PC will run an XP SP3 and there you can install all your old favourite games and then you can run it from under Win 7 in virtualized mode - but you won't notice the difference. It's more tinkering but you don't loose anything in the end.

Is Win 7 going to be strictly 64bit?

WITP fires up no problems under my 64-bit Windows 7.

So all should be well.

Cheers

Nope, there will be 32 bit version coming even from RC as well. But nowadays 64 bit started to offer some really valuable features (at least for me, who is now running 8GB of system RAM and soon 1 GB additional on the VGA, which was impossible to do on a 32bit OS). Also 64 bit apps are the future very soon.

yes.....the 4GB limit is bugging me but i opted this time out to stay with 32bit Vista. Next time out though i think it'll be 64bit so that i can put another 4 in my newest machine. I have two old P4's if i have any backwards compatability issues.
