OK guys ( gals?) am taking the leap and aquiring a laptop. But first, some info from the illuminati out there. What should I look for, if I require the following : 70-80% playability with the latest game out there. ( WOW standard), light-meduim weight, go with Vista or not? In short, what specs should I check out.
Thanks a bunch, you people rock.

Cheers
MC

Windows XP, atleast 2 Gigs of RAM, should be able play Company of Heroes at MAX detail and perfect framerate the whole time.Atleast 2.4 Ghz processor. So far it might be a little heavy.(oops!)

Check Egghead, I believe they sell an ASUS laptop with 18" monitor, 8GB of ram, good graphics card forget the model, Vista 64 Ultimate for around 2900 US.

I don't think there are any laptops out yet with the new I7 chip which some motherboards hold 24GB plus, but I'm no expert in this area.  Someone like Gem35, Jim, JD, or a host of other techies would probably be better to answer your question.

I'm always of the feeling that you can NEVER have to much RAM.

My suggestion would be to purchase a modern desktop rig along with a cheaper Notebook. So you get two pc's for the price of one high-end Laptop.

Problem with Notebooks is, that you can't upgrade them easily and are bound to certain components. And we all know how fast hardware get outdated.

Thanks for the replies...I guess I forgot to mention I'm on a strict budget (circa $ 1300, tops)

Not as fast as it did in previous decades... I'm still running a 7+ year old computer, and I'm still happy with it (although it's been on it's last legs for the last 2 years). The trick was buying a gig of ram when NO ONE did so, and replacing the video card every few years.. which leads back into your point about laptop hardware. So, never mind this post. *grin*

Happy with a sub-1000 Can laptop by Toshiba, Satellite A300, with the ATI HD3470 GPU.
Comes with a 250 gigs SATA drive, real hw sound, 3 gigs of DDR RAM, 1280x800 LCD, vga and HDMI out, can extend desktop to vga or HDMI, don't know if you can do triple head with it :)
Haven't played WoW since 2005, and I hear they've sneakily ramped up the eye candy minimums, but it should run it fine.
I run Vista64 (Home Premium included) and Kubuntu Intrepid on it, doing just fine.

Runs the latest Flight Gear Flight Sim just fine, even in MP although like everyone else, I get some choppiness when loading the heavier a/c models.
And it uses Open Scene Graph, which is not optimized for gaming.

All in all, very happy with my purchase. They also have slightly more expensive satellite models with nvidia GPUs if you prefer, btw.
Just check your local toshiba site, or resellers.
Cheers,
Nic

..And I'd stay away from cheap Acer notebooks like the plague, and if you go Asus, research the model beforehand...
As a sidenote, my laptop came with nearly latest Catalyst ATI drivers installed, including proper OpenGL support.
So DX10, DX9 and OGL 3.0 out of the box :)
