There was an earlier discussion on naval bombardment missions here.  IIRC there are now two categories of bombardments; "raid" and "bombard".  Raid is what we've currently got in WitP; the ships race in, throw some shells and hightail it for their base.  Bombard is a more deliberate shelling of the shore, preparatory for invasions.  The ships stay in place and inflict more damage at the risk of not trying to evade air/sub attacks.  At least I think that was how it was described, anyway.

Yes, can someone confirm this from the AE team. That would be so very nice!

So you would have the option to choose the equivalent of what the Japanease did on a regular basis with Guadacanal, or what the Allies did with every island they invaded starting with Tarawa.

Any details we can get on if this is indeed possible in AE and how it works exactly would be most appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Chad

Still waiting for confirmation on this if possible.

There is only one bombardment mission and it is the same as WITP - what you refer to as raid.

Bombardment can be carried out as part of an amphibious assault, one day of major bombardment and then troop support and CD gun suppression.

Anything more than than must be orchestrated by the player with multiple TFs.

I bought the original SPI WitP in 1977, hooked up with Pacific War 15 years ago, and have been waiting for this ever since. Before that we played WSIM (even created the stats for a USN 74 and 120)and Bismarck, and anything else that resembled a Naval Game. My patience is finally beginning to run a little bit thin, but I think I might just barely be able to hang on a little while longer.

Is there a possibility with the Naval Support units to raise a marginal base 7-8-9 to a level 10 for major repair work, or is that going to be precisely limited to existing level 10 reports with naval shipyards. Or, do ARDs exist in a fashion which would enable a combination of Naval Support units and ARDs to work in that fashion, say at Ulithi in case of heavy combat damage (like sewing the bow back on the Pittsburg.) way out in WestPac?

Hang in there buddy.

Naval support does not directly "increase" port level. A repair level is set for each port size. Naval support adds to that number. It is the repair level that determines how much repair can take place. To specifically answer: naval support can raise the repair level above that of a level 10 port.

Naval support can be combined with some other repair functions, including ARDs. There are some limits and other fine print.
