Are there demos for Matrix games? Most particularly Operational Art of War III and John Tiller's Campaign Series. I found a demo of TOAW I and toyed around with it a bit but as I try and compare it to JTCS, I was hoping to find a demo of that as well. As a person who has nevery really purchased a computer wargame (played some boardgames here and there), it's tough to decide between the two as to which one would be the best choice without having access to a demo. So short question -- are there demos? Long question -- thoughts on deciding between the two?

Not for those, to my knowledge. I'd be surprised, both have been around an awful long time in one form or another and most potential purchasers are probably already familiar with them in some way or other. If you've found a demo for the original TOAW that will give you a good idea about that one; there have been a lot of improvements but most are 'under the hood'. You will find plenty of AAR (after action reports) with commentary and photos floating about the internet for both games.

As to the long question, depends on whether you want a primarily operational level game (TOAW) or tactical level game (JTCS).

I was able to find a demo for Talonsoft's Divided Ground. Worked for me on Win XP.

I somewhere should still have a West Front demo but it wouldn't work for same reason. The original game was written for DX6 iirc and DX7 already caused problems, made it necessary to switch some files. There was a thread about on Talonsoft board back to the days.

Anyway, what I liked about EF II / WF were tank miniatures, sounds and marches. It's a beer and pretzel game and for me it was also a successor to Panzer General. However, if you're coming from board gaming, used to play with counters, I'd suggest to purchase TOAW as it has more ambitious content. In addition you could get Steel Panthers for free. This one is similiar to JTCS.
