Here we go again.

This time I am playing the Soviets again, though as my last AAR proved suboptimal as I posted it not when I played the moves but 1 week later, I decided to do this like my Axis AAR. So writing and posting the AAR right after my turn. Which means Boron is not allowed to view the thread this time as I will be VERY concrete about my intentions and planning. Some information about the scenario beforehand again. Also for the information about the basic changes.

The first version included:

- Many more VPs over the map, every turn you are awarded one PP for VP under your control. Initial situation 80:125 Axis:Soviets.
- Edited Combat efficiency: SS 125%, Soviet Guards 110%, Germans 100%, Finns 95%, Russia 90% and Axis Minor 75%
- To make up for this, the soviets have increased production capacities all over the SU.
- Siberia is connected over big land hexes and further to the east.
- A land connection to finnland over Norway.
- Germans have fighter, bomber, heavy inf and staff 2.
- Soviets have Inf and Tanks level 2.
- The initial deployment and OOB are nearly the same as the vanilla GPW.

Boron and me tweaked the GPW scenario a bit again.

- Basically giving the soviets a bit more of production.
- Taking the Siberian production and putting it at the Volga.
- Making the Volga more realistic and resemble the geographical situation better. (Astrakhan and Saratov added as possible crossings for the river.
- Creating a realistic map behind Voronezh instead of the nuclear wasteland of Vanilla.
- Making foot units go one hex further.

Again the Houserule:

- No roads.

Turn 1, SU, June 41

As always the first turn is not a nice one for the SU. Boron goes for massive destruction instead of fancy maneuvring resulting in massive losses all over the front which is by now not existant.

As the battered remains of the Army flee before the Axis onslaught, it becomes clear that the Red Army needs to recover before it can smash the invaders. In the last game I tried to defend every city at least with one divison to delay the invaders. As this worked pretty well, I will use that tactic again, though with less reinforcements from the factories. Which means that every city will host 15 inf, 2 mgs and Infantry gun. This should discourage attacks by small forces if I add 3-4 bazookas to the mix.

Now onto the battleplan. Every front has been renamed to host the name of the region/city it is attached to.

HQ North Front

Riga will be defended by a skeleton corps to avoid an easy taking by the enemy. Every bridge over the Daugava will be blown up if possible. Possible delay 2 weeks(2 turns).

Pskov will be the first defense line against the enemy. One Army will dig itself in and will be supplied with flak, rifles and Anti Tank guns. This line is supposed to delay the invader drastically enabling the Leningrad and Demyansk Front line to prepare themselves to hold the enemy until the winter arrives. Heavy losses are expected, the loss of the entire army group as well.
If I can delay Boron for 3 weeks I can count myself lucky. If he redirects his Panzergruppe North he will be in for a nasty suprise.

A Reserve Army will be erected 100km behind the Demyansk Front, but any mobile elements of the North Front will be relocated to Stavka for use at the West Front.

HQ West Front

This front hosts the smallest margin for error. If the front at Vyazma and Bryansk fails, only the reserve army at Moscow will remain to deal with the invaders. Massive reinforcements from Stavka will arrive at this front. This front must hold at all costs till October.

The front stretches on in the south to Kursk. On those positions the units will have to receive less reinforcements and air cover.

At Tula plans are for the erection of a massive Shock army intended to come to the aid of the Bryansk Front or to flank a possible attack on Vyazma.

Minsk and Smolensk will alike Riga be held by skeleton corps with only a few reinforcements.

HQ Ukraine Front

A whole army will be sacrificed at Kiev to delay the inevitable fall of the city. Although I plan massive reinforcements and most of the remains of the SW Front will be sent to Kiev, we can not hold out against a major offensive of the axis HG Süd. Still, with luck we can delay the german advance for at least 4 weeks at this position.

The true defensive positions will be at the Kharkov-Kursk Line. Each city hosting its own front.

A second massive spearhead at Voronezh will be formed for a possible winter offensive in the ukrainian plains, or if the worst happens to support a counter-offensive of its northern counterpart at Tula.

HQ Süd

This part of the frontline will fight against Romanian forces supported by german elements. Regardless it will also retreat to two positions. Behind the Dnejpr and near Perakop our stand will be made at this front district. A smaller mobile force will be gathered at Rostov possible covering a retreat of the Dnejpr Front to Rostov, it will be broken.

At Maikop a small defense army will be created to hold the Kerch Gap, if the Perakop Front will be forced to hole itself up in Sevastopol.

Here is a screenie of the West Front taking up defensive positions along rivers and in the woods. Although the Vitebsk-Orsha line host a smaller corridor and better terrain, Boron´s speed will make a defense futile. I will establish rather strong Kampfgruppen in those cities hopefully delaying Boron for 1-2 weeks, whilst I gather my forces at the main frontline indicated by my spraying.

The remnants of the soviet airforce gather at Moscow. Trying to thwart the Axis airforce directly resulted in massive losses in the last two games, so I will keep it mobile between the fronts, hopefully avoiding attack for one turn and then immeaditly relocating to another part of the front, hopefully keeping Boron on his toes. They will be instructed to retreat when they have 25% losses, enabling perhaps a second fight and so thwart possible bomb runs in the theatre they are assigned to.

Turn 2, SU, End June 41

HQ North Front

The front in Pskov is forming up. Several divisons have been reinforced with Antitank-guns and Flaks. The battered, armored remains of the old front north of Königsberg arrive at the outskirts of the city as well. At the Mannerheim line everything is silent for now. Several new MG Battaillons are sent to the russian divisons there.

HQ West Front

The front line is nowhere near established, but I have several more turns before the Axis come into air range. Infantry divisons are issued several bazookas, machine guns and the infantry strength is tripled before they dig themselves in.

HQ Ukraine Front

The defense lines at Kiev are in place. Whilst a number of understrength divisons are tasked with holding the line up to the Dnejpr, reinforcements and retreating remains from the main front line augment the fortifications in Kiev. Also my airforce is dispatched to Kiev to cover the remaining tank divisons of the old SW Front and perhaps shoot down an Axis fighter wing or two.

HQ Süd

More divisons are evacuated from Odessa by sea and the Dnjepr line is nearly in positions. Several infantry bataillons are sent to the Crimea to form the new Parakop front.

The situation in the south. Notice the airforce operating from Kiev under the cover of newly aquired flaks fresh from the ukrainian factories. You can see the line at the Dnjepr clearly. Also notice that I amass Artillery in Kiev as well, quite contrary to my former game.

The situation in the north. Not much to add here. The Demyansk Front is rushing backwards to establish a new line in the dense woods east of Staraya Russia.

Turn 3, SU, Beginning of July 1941

This is the first turn where Boron only drives forward on most fronts.

In the north Boron attacks and takes a small part of the Leningrad defense line. Nothing serious, but the armored remains of the old NW Front are sent to Leningrad to help.

In the center, where I post a close up screenie in the next post, I try to lure Boron into attacking Minsk and delay his advance by cutting off his spearhead with 2 tankdivisons. As expected I won´t see them live through the next turn.

In the south and in the Ukraine not much happens. I continue to evacuate troops to the Crimea.

The situation on the west front. The Minsk Front equipped with 3000 supplies has dug in with 3 infantry divisons and counterattacks in the north with 2 tank divisons. Hopefully increasing the delay Boron suffers at Minsk by one week.

Turn 4, SU, Beginning of June 1941

North Front

Boron renews his assault on Leningrad nearly breaking into the city. Vital Artillery and troops are lost during his attack. The tank divisons arrive in the city and counter-attack though as they are exhausted from the long drive they also fail to achieve their goal.

West Front

Minsk is encircled and probably lost this turn. It served his purpose of diverting part of Boron´s attention for one weak.

Ukraine Front

The last remains of the SW Front pass through Kiev, driving onto Kharkov and Kursk. They will form new fronts there.

South Front

A rather quiet front as the Romanians only advance and not attack. For now I retreat as well, this will soon change.

The losses/kills and my production of Turn 4.

As you can see I am mainly producting Infantry, Bazookas, Machine Guns and Anti-Tank/Anti-Air support.

The lone axis fighter is a transporter shot down in the south as Boron spots my Luftwaffe with his reconnaisance.

The fleet before Leningrad is lost, the axis fleet doesn´t loose one ship.:(

The situation before Leningrad. Notice that Boron nearly broke through.

In my turn I encircle his troops, though I doubt that 2 infantry divisons can cut off Boron completly, but they are used better trying to cut him off then fighting him.

The westfront. I actually conduct an aistrike against the german spearhead aiming at Smolensk, with not very good results.

The air attack results in some dead engineers. My divebombers actually manage to shoot 2 trucks. Yay.
