64 years ago - August 1st 1944 at 17:00 CET - Polish Home Army started Warsaw Uprising.

Just wanted to let you all known it was biggest resistance action in occupied Europe.

For 63 days of heavy fights Poles were dreaming about freedom.

On July 29[1], 1944, the first Soviet armoured units reached the outskirts of Warsaw, but were counter-attacked by German 39th Panzer Corps, comprising 4th Panzer Division, 5th SS Panzer Division, 19th Panzer Division, and the Hermann Goering Panzer Division.[6][7] By 10 August, in the ensuing battle of Radzymin, the Germans had enveloped and inflicted heavy casualties on the Soviet 3rd Tank Corps at Wołomin, 15 kilometres outside Warsaw.

Sounds almost as if soviets did try to reach warsaw but considering they never even did airdrops I continue to assume that they had no intention of helping. Ive read the warsaw uprising before. Its an interesting piece of (war) history.

The Russians/Soviets wanted to see every last Pole who was remotely loyal to the legitimate Polish government in exile killed. What better way than to have the Germans do it for them. The Polish underground army was set up to be destroyed by Uncle Joe.
They were hero's which the Polish people can be very proud of.

I hope you don't mind digging out the thread.

Today it's another anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.
Please give a moment for the heros.

[political rant]
65 years now, and true to form, German (local) news manage to once again confuse the '44 Warsaw uprising with the '43 Warsaw ghetto uprising. :/

Not that the latter doesn't deserve recognition and remembrance, but this continued poor performance just annoys me - it may not be as bad as "Polish concentration camps" (I believe we had a few of those as well already this year :x), but it shows a lack of awareness for Polish concerns that is causing unnecessary friction between the countries.

[/political rant]

Honour the fallen brave
Valour with their lives they gave
Pride that will never fade
we still remember.

(taken from the Bolt Thrower song Pride, off the album Honour, Valour, Pride, I thought it a fitting tribute to the heroes of the AK)

A courageous action by the Poles! If only they had succeeded, the map of Poland would have looked a lot different.

I had the opportunity to visit the Uprising Musem (http://www.1944.pl/?lang=en) last December. Very good display of a brave and tragic piece of history! Don't miss it if you are near Warsaw!
