EU: Rome is suppose to have a tutorial when it is released. I can't imagine players that are unfamiliar with Paradox games being able to keep their heads above water without one. If you are familiar with the EU series, it is a breeze to pick up.

Well it does deviate quite a bit from the HOI/EU style of play. It sort
of merges CK and EU elements. I think some sort of tutorial pdf would have been in order yes.

And that is also the scenario included in the demo :).

Would have prefered the option to play a minor but one can't get it all. Being from North I like
playing the dirty barbarians hehe.

I'm not a big fan of the in media res aspect of the demo scenario. I have played EVERY iteration of EU and its similar engines and I still needed a little learning time with the demo to figure out what was going on. It does not help the learning curve that you start off in a gigantic war with the other major power on the map. I usually try to start all of my EU games at a time when my power is not already at war (so I can prepare for a war of my choosing).

I think it would have been advantageous to put one smaller power (perhaps Massilia) to let players get into the new system. My first release game was going to be as Rome, but might actually be as a minor, probably Massilia (I study medieval Provence for a living). Of course the initial game start up may be with a rather small and manageable Rome, not long after the founding.

No one has reported so I'll ask. How are troups gained? Is it like CK where you have peasants, burghers, clergy, nobles except those have been changed for roman period? I really got tired of all that clicking to get everyone happy. I'd rather see troups gained over time by the buildings I build and upgrade and even having a choice would be even better like the total war series. I don't particularly like the computer AI picking my forces based on the loyalty of four different classes of citizens. That's the one thing about CK that was kinda skewed and silly.

I would suggest HPS's Punic Wars and Gallic Wars.

Hey Rav, am I autistic as you put it?

Let's please stop talking about the ASD related syndromes, except in the designated thread. Having just watched a movie on Autistic children (called, funnily enough, Autism: The Musical), it is not a designation to be tossing lightly back and forth. It is very serious and can truly complicate people's lives.

About EU:Rome. Troops are levied similar to EU, where you build them. Only certain provinces can build certain troops, depending on what resource a province has. Thus, if you have Iron, you can make heavy infantry, with wood, Ships and Archers. All provinces have one type of resource, but you can trade this resource via trade routes to three other provinces (at least Rome can, so many it is trade tech related). These trade routes bring money and also bring the special benefit of the good (adds to buildables, gives pop growth, lowers revolt risk).

EU: Rome is out, got my copy.  Close to EU:3.  So far not a bad game.

My Collectors edition should arrive soon, it does appear to have some elements of Crusader Kings which imo is a good thing.

What was 'added' to the collector's edition?

Not sure if this is obvious but Caesar 3 is an excellent empire/ city builder that holds up well to repeated plays. The only thing that I don't like about it is that there are Roman gods to placate, and although I'm sure most Romans really did try to placate the gods by holding festivals etc for the modern gamer it seems a bit, well, silly to be honest.

A free download/gift of EU:Rome available now(dd'ing now) as well as the usual extras....poster, etc. Not to overlook a custom avatar and entry to the Collectors Edition forums which has its perks.

Only problem with the download is you really need a manual with these games...and I hate PDFs...especially BIG pdfs.

I don't mind buying a game on DD with a small(ish) manual (PC:K) or one which doesn't need a manual (Armed Assault)...but a game like this you need a manual, and if it's printed, I like the pre-printed one.

So I will have to wait.

Oh...and I wasn't paying the extra for the Collectors Edition

I was actually coming on here to correct myself....

I've just fired up EUIII again and needed some help so picked up the manual...and then I realised.....Paradox manuals are GAWD awful...woefully bad. They have all the required info...but trying to find the stuff! The table of Contents is the worst I've ever come across and no index either....bad, bad manuals to try and find things in...

So download, here I come...

Mind you...the b&%tards want €39.99 which is £34....and I could get the game from Play.com for £24.99.

So I think I will wait after all.
