Memories of his match against Boris Spasky still resonate in my crusting brain. I would get home from school and turn on the local PBS station to watch the droll Shelby Lyman give a real time move by move account of the game. ( Even after all these years I still recall that the show used the opening of the 4th movement of Shostakovich's 5th symphony as their intro theme). The moves arrived via a ticker tape and Lyman would show the moves on a rather cheesy wall mounted chess board. More often than not the pieces would fall behind the slots on the squares and he would look dumbfounded at the board when he tried to move a piece that had mysteriously disappeared! He had an "expert" panel discussing each move who were a motley crew of shut-ins, but they knew their chess. I have to admit that I was riveted to these programs.
