Capt Cliff -> Battle of the Bulge - Grief Units? (6/2/2004 9:26:03 PM)

Will there be any way to simulate the German Grief units (SS in USA uniforms) in Battlefields? Basically a unit that can ignore ZOC and cause units to take the wrong turn at intersections, ect.

Capt. Cliff.

No because Battlefields! is a game system reather than a game made only on Ardennes battle. This some in games features may help to simulate such unit.

The game scale is company size being the smallest unit type. I don't know what size the Grief units were, but I believe they were small platoon sized units, therefore this game system will not be able to simulate this. However, there are some alternatives:

1) there are irregular units which could be given a higher combat rating to simulate their disguised status. ZOC will not be affected but perhaps the higher combat values would offset these a bit, sort of adhoc units.

2) with the event engine you may be able to bring up German grief units behind enemy lines which further simulate their ability to get past the enemy. These may also be randomized locations where they can pop up.

Not sure if there's any other way to simulate this, but one can get pretty creative with the system in place.

The Grief units did play a small part in the battle as did Von der Hydyte's para units. The Grief units were small, 4 man teams that were sent out to misdirrect traffic and screw up road signs. One team killed themselves when they barreled into the road block at the Diniant bridge as full speed! It would be nice to have them but ... maybe a interdiction of a road junction that causes the moving unit to change direction or stop? Sure would be nice to have them...[8|]

The game scale probably would not allow use of these type of units. [:(]

HPS' Bulge'44 had Grief teams and the paratroopers, even thought the scale is identical...Same goes for the Bulge scenario in TOAW, which had Grief teams. As far as I know BF! does have Special Forces designated units...wouldn't it be possible to use those somehow?

Given the combat values limits, the scenario designer has the ability to have units with 30 times the "Infantry attack" power of the weakest unit (for eg.) It would be possible to have very weak rear area units to interdict movement somewhat, they would simply have to have a "company" unit size indicator.
