What is their purpose? They seem too weak to be reliable in combat. The only advantage they seem to give you is speed, so perhaps plug a gap when nothing else is available?

With their nice range on rails they do make a good quick reaction force when little else is available. Their loss isn't particularly painful or expensive. A German one makes a decent anti-partisan unit. It can zip in and defend any town or city in the rear being threatened by Soviet partisans. The Soviets get one for free in the production queue. Like the Soviet light tank units you can use them as a temporary road block where needed. I don't think I've ever rebuilt the Ilya Muromets after it sacrifices itself for the state blocking a panzer for a turn.

A real low priority item. They used to have a range of three, but I think a patch knocked it back down to two. Looking at their attack numbers they seem to be primarily oriented towards attacking resources not units. Before the range change you could set up a German one in northwest France and use it to lob shells at London several times a turn depending on how many shells you had accumulated. Now all you can do is hit Maidstone. Kinda limited.

the armored trains are useful for the Russians on the Eastern Front, as they can hit the advancing German forces and then retreat behind a front line. If done right you can get the Armor train up to 2-3 elite stars and it will do damage to German armor and infantry forces.

I have not figured out how to use the British one.

The Railguns have the following advantages. 1. They will lay waste to fortifications. Super easy to take out units in fortifications after being hit. 2. They will take down supply and MPPs of resource cities and factories. Very helpful in attacking Leningrad. 3. They will reduce ports strength, which can be helpful in repelling an invasion.

Railgun can be used to help take Malta.

When they still had the crazy range of three hexes they seemed more attractive. However, the game's developers felt this was an oversight from War in Europe and decided to reduce the range to better fit the scale of the World at World map.

For Germany, I just stick to straight artillery now, although I lean towards rocket artillery as a type. They have better de-entrenchment and demoralization numbers and they don't take as long to build. They can operate in all terrain and can be transported by sea if the need arises. You'll never fit the Schwerer Gustav on a boat.

Yeah, I read about that change. I might revert.

I like rockets, too. But why not use both rockets and regular artillery? It's not like you get enough of either in this game anyways :)

I do use both. I just tend to build out the available rocket artillery in the purchase pool before I start in on the heavy artillery.

I have grown fond of the armored trains for the Soviets. Very useful for a lot of situations.

One important thing - there is no retalation against Armored Trains attacks. Quite handy. But to build them before all those tanks, mechs, planes? Rather no.

I didn't realize that - thanks for the info!

Are there other units that are immune to retaliation?

By the way, perhaps Rail Guns need to be buffed? Losing 1 hex range is huge without any compensating buff.

My opinion will likely be an unpopular one, but I think the more specialized items like rail guns, armored trains, recon units, anti-tank (and the wunderwaffen missiles too) should have simply been omitted given the map scale of this game. They might have made sense in the other SC titles where you have more game tiles to work with. But at this world-wide scale and with the one unit only stacking limit, you sometimes fight to find room to properly position all the corps, armies and air fleets that do most of the real work. England gets so packed with various bomber types and escorts and sooner or later with infantry and paratroops for the Normandy invasion that it becomes difficult to find room to accommodate everyone. Sometimes less is more.

But given that these exotic unit types probably have their devoted fans after featuring in previous titles that likely would have been a tough proposition for the game's developers. "Why did you cut my favorite weapon?....Bwahhh!"

Oh, I agree. All of those units should have been omitted - and precisely because of the scale of the game, as you say. For instance, the Soviet rail guns seem to have been 16 inch caliber; and an Iowa class battleship alone had 9 16 inch guns. But I am assuming those units are here to stay, and the devs won't want to completely delete them.
