And if so with what settings?

I'm still using my manual (still stuck in the Suez Canal)as my excuse for not trying; and thus avoiding defeat.

But I have read about a hundred pages of Alan Clark's Barbarossa and the relevant chapters of Liddell Hart's WW2 - so what is the current view on whether a direct push would have got through to Moscow?

melnibonian is within striking distance of Moscow in September 1941 in his AAR on normal difficulty settings.

Had an opponent call a game turn 12 when I crossed the moskva river to the south and enveloped his field armies in front of the city. Didn't take the city though, but the wrighting was on the wall. So yes, it is doable

Wow - and what an AAR. Thanks for that.

I look at the faces of those 20 year old kids in the photos and (aged 67) I am so glad I didn't have to go through any of that stuff on either side.

On another thought I often see the anti tank guns (mostly 37mm) seemingly set up in the middle of the road.

The AI on normal wont take Moscow in 1941. Slower than me.

Normal Difficulty setting taking Moscow should be pretty easy against the AI

Thanks for the nice words. I really appreciate it [:)]

I plan to do a Soviet AAR once I finish with the German one, so be prepared [;)]

I totally agree with you. We are lucky to belong to a generation that grew up in a society that hasn't faced military conflicts and we haven't been through the hellish conditions it entails. Although it sounds natural it isn't. Look for example what happened to Yugoslavia or Syria or Cyprus or even Ukraine. I count my blessings on this and we should all work hard to make sure that these horrors do not repeat themselves ever again.

I totally agree with you. It feels strange especially when you compare the images with those from Normandy in 1944. My explanation is that during the advance in 1941 the Germans were avoiding the creation of entrenched positions as they were rapidly overrunning the Soviets, especially in the beginning of the war. Still there are a lot of references in the literature of a slogging fighting with trench warfare similar to 1914-18 in 1941 especially in late August and early September during the defensive stance of AGC and Guderian's drive in Ukraine.

Either way it looks strange but I am sure there must have been some operational reason for this that I am missing.
