The directional icon changes orientation when a unit is reported as out of comms. The position remains static and all of the data is displayed as XXX in the UNIT STATUS panel.

If a unit is destroyed while out of comms the unit icon disappears completely and it returns a Unit Lost message even if it is not detected by any friendly units. Though not knowing anything would be a tough to deal with as a player. Seeing a unit disappear into a comm dead zone and not hear anything back would be both realistic and potentially maddening. You'd almost need a "presumed lost" type message or even uncertainty rings showing potential location.

Logged for investigation.

Nice touch with the GIF too!

Thanks, we'll sort the icon direction.

The suggestion for a "presumed lost" status makes sense, but would be a whole lot of work (significant changes to unit status code) for not a substantial benefit. In RL most units have emergency comm systems (e.g. radio buoys on submarines) that activate when the platform is lost or suffers a catastrophic accident. So the "and they were never heard of again" predicament is pretty uncommon in the post-WW2 environment (things like MH370 notwithstanding).

The unit icon will now show un-rotated when a unit is out of comms. In for next update.
