When a troopship carrying a LCU is sunk other ships without troops might rescue the LCU and appear in their troop capacity.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Amazing things in this game (10/4/2019 2:15:42 AM)

yes, even destroyers or PBs will try to rescue survivors,

not too many will, but at least makes it faster to rebuild

Yaab -> RE: Amazing things in this game (10/4/2019 8:03:08 AM)

Really? Rescued men appear as an LCU detachemnt in an empty xAK? Never noticed this.

fcooke -> RE: Amazing things in this game (10/4/2019 9:18:06 AM)

Same here. I read it in the manual that ships will try to pick up swimmers but have never seen it. IIRC some players even placed an empty AP in the convoy to help with this. All that said, any troops I ever ship were split into fragments and those convoys were also very heavily escorted so maybe I just never lost a ship with troops on board. I never really ran into IJN subs once clear of the West coast until approaching OZ. Heavy air patrols in both those areas (as well as ASW groups, but the poor minesweepers that generally make up those groups tend to suffer).

It's common to get messages that ships are picking up survivors.

I think Q-Ball was a forumite who took great pains to include empty transports with invasion TFs to handle the rescuing of men from transports sunk en route or at the beachhead. He really worked on that part of his game and noted it in his AARs. He was a smart and brainy player. Obvert and Lowpe remind me of Q-Ball in that way - innovative, thoughtful, creative, meticulous, students, testers.

Interesting. I've seen the messages as well, but never tried putting an empty ship in the TF.

Has anyone ever done a mod where the USN ATRs (Ocean Rescue Tugs) were included? Seems like modeling them with a small troop capacity, no cargo, would allow them to be used historically without unbalancing things.

Dili -> RE: Amazing things in this game (10/4/2019 6:02:22 PM)

If you have PG's, or AM's, DD's with troops capacity they will get the troops, the problem for those that play allies for some reason many US and other ships do not have carrying cap+ability while their Japanese corresponding classes have. USN side for example ships that are often employed fro escort do not have troops capacity : AM, DM/S, Pc etc.

As I recall the explanation, the reason is that the Japanese frequently used DD's and such as improvised troop transports, while the USN did not.

My recollection of the original discussion was also that it was pre the ability to rebuild LCU's so rescuing some troops would allow the unit to be rebuilt

became more academic after we allowed rebuilding of LCUs

In my mod I gave the USN DMs a small carrying capacity, that can be used in fast transport TFs. By the time you get all the Robert H. Smith class, the historical SOP was for mines to be air or sub delivered, which is pretty much what happens in game as well. So rather than simply using them as AAA escorts, I built another option in for the allied player.

Yaab -> RE: Amazing things in this game (10/5/2019 6:57:59 AM)

Dili, can you post a screenie of an xAP that hade been empty, but after having picked survivors, now has an LCU detachment onboard made of the rescued troops?

Dili -> RE: Amazing things in this game (10/5/2019 7:53:50 AM)

Sorry Yaab i don't think i have.

yep Ian R. many ships i think warrant have a small troop capability.

Andy Mac -> RE: Amazing things in this game (10/5/2019 9:23:21 AM)

Be very carefull if doing this the AI may go splat

if PBEM only fine but you don't want the AI using the wrong shis in the wrong TF because you let them carry some troops

Ian R -> RE: Amazing things in this game (10/5/2019 3:24:03 PM)

Hi Andy, this was in my mod against your tier 3 ironman AI IJ ... I gave them a cargo cap for their mine spaces (only) to complement the APD persons cap, it works out OK (but if you don't restrict them to cruise speed they spend 3 out of 4 days fixing engine damage anyway).

I also put in the RN Abdiels, and just for the fun of it, 3 of the Italian Capitani Romani 40 kt CMs. All with 250/250 persons/cargo.

After all the Akagi Marus, Lindas, the allied player should have some fun.

Dili -> RE: Amazing things in this game (10/5/2019 3:27:07 PM)

But that does not apply to both side? or the AI takes that in account for the Japanese side?

spence -> RE: Amazing things in this game (10/5/2019 6:21:52 PM)

Nobody is going to leave soldiers swimming around in the wreckage unless there is an immediate threat of enemy action and even then it happened a lot in WW2 (the USCGC Bibb (an escort for a convoy under attack in the Atlantic) rescued many survivors of the SS Henry Mallory even after specifically being ordered not to stop). That would apply to any type of ship regardless of "cargo capacity". However saving the men is not the same as saving their combat capability. In fact in the US military (at least in those days), they would be entitled to 30 days "survivors leave (might not be called that and might be a different period but some sort of compensation existed for taking that swim).
