Scorpion86 -> RE: New Scenario for testing - For The Honour Of The Republic, 1991 (9/15/2019 8:02:56 PM)
I just took your scenario for a spin. Here are my thoughts:
-The scenario has a very well written description and briefing. I particularly like the way that the briefing both elaborates on the description and effectively builds geopolitical context while at the same time describing the rationale for things in the scenario, like munitions availability.
-The use (and this is admittedly nitpicky) of "SRAAM" in the briefing threw me off - I had never seen the acronym before, and initially misread it as "SRAM". Wondering why a Soviet SAG had American nukes was enough of a head-scratcher that I looked it up online, which cleared it up.
-I was surprised, given the WWIII context, that I could not make all aircraft loadouts quick turnaround (not critical as much an interesting design choice).
-I had no clue where to start my reconnaissance efforts, which took up the majority of my playthrough time. Even a 2-day old Portuguese ship datum (as opposed to the datum of the Kiev itself) would have greatly aided the search process.
-I rushed the attack by launching everything at the same time, and suffered casualties for it. I still have a lot to learn about timing strikes against multilayered air defense networks.
-Last BDA showed light damage to the Kiev & CG, and medium damage and a fire aboard an FFG (which I am not naming so as to avoid spoilers), as well as 6 Soviet aircraft, at the cost of 1 P-3, 1 A-6 and 13(!!) of my A-7s.
-At what level do you regard damage to a ship as a mission kill? Is that reflected in the scoring?
-I completed the scenario in about 18 hours. Is that what you expected?
I thought the scenario was excellent in multiple ways. The documentation (briefing, description) explained the situation succinctly. I enjoyed the scope as well - it was more complex than a dogfight, but not nearly as complicated as managing a theatre of operations, or even a CVBG. Difficulty seemed appropriate, though I'm hardly a professional. As this was my first runthrough, I'm not really in a position to assess replayability. It was fun.
Thank you for the kind words, it's so enjoyable to have such a positive response to a first scenario!
In answer to your questions, the aim of this scenario is to sink all ships in this Surface Action Group. Yes, you can do it, I've done it when testing this scenario. I'll give you a hint: Because you rely on aircraft without stand-off weaponry, use your stand-off munitions to disable long range SAMs. And if you fire a HARM against a unit firing a SAM, the missile will lock on to the fire-control radar. And without a fire-control radar...
Take heart, you'll get there!
And thank you for your sugestions regarding the briefing! At a later date, I will polish it up!
And what about the Forgers? Were they too easy, too hard, just enough? And finding the Kiev? Was it difficult? Did any civilian contact throw you off?
Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it and I hope you give the new version I just published a go!
