MikeJ19 -> Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/4/2019 6:41:47 PM)

I'm going back to playing the NATO side for this battle.

This is a scenario that comes from Origins 2017, I believe.

Here is a look at the area of operations

A look at the enemy forces. I have finally discovered how to get more information on the opposing force. Should have seen it earlier...

CapnDarwin -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/4/2019 11:47:12 PM)

There are PDFs with the mission info and some other useful bits for each of those scenarios that should be in the folder.

CapnDarwin -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/5/2019 12:19:45 AM)

Plus the VPs do not matter in the Staff exercises and we have them off during the battle. The staff is looking to perform the objective of the mission brief. At least to start with.

MikeJ19 -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/5/2019 1:41:37 AM)

Okay, I will worry less about the VPs and more about the objective! Thanks for letting me know.

Also, the presentation was great! Thanks!

HeinzBaby -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/5/2019 9:41:38 AM)

The AI will not ignore the VP's.
Secure Lauterbach and smash the Reds, once they are crippled go for the Schlitz river crossings..
I'm going to enjoy this AAR [:D]

MikeJ19 -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/5/2019 10:08:46 AM)

I have taken a look at the Soviet options.

Here is the first one

MikeJ19 -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/5/2019 10:09:44 AM)

The final option - a more defensive one.

StuccoFresco -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/5/2019 2:17:38 PM)

Do the T-80s have gun-launched ATGM? That would significantly change their use. If they have, i'd hid them in the forested slopes to snipe NATO units from across the bridge. From the big hill SE of Lauterbach, they could have a good LOS on the town's approaches.

If I were the Soviet commander, i'd put some units at Hertstein and try a surprise offensive across the bridges toward Lautertal AFTER I engaged the main NATO forces in the map center. I'd try to chase down NATO's SPAs and HQ for sure.

CapnDarwin -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/5/2019 4:14:36 PM)

Yes, some of the T-80 are ATGM capable. [X(] The OOB uses the Soviet Operational Maneuver Group (OMG) template.

MikeJ19 -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/5/2019 7:40:24 PM)

As Capn Darwin mentioned, in the folder with the scenario are some documents that help. Here is a look at three slides from the document. They show the make up of my force.

Here is the 1-32nd

MikeJ19 -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/6/2019 12:08:31 PM)

A different look at the AO.

To secure a crossing site (or multiple sites) across the Schlitz, I have to get there.

Even a small Soviet presence in LAUTERBACH could really slow my advance, and I only have 6 hours.

I have six different approaches some combining as we approach the Schlitz River to get to the Objectives in the East.

The far North and South approaches are good short term options. However, unless the B254 is secured quickly, they will be difficult for resupplying and forward movement (no good roads).

I see five possible objectives. The first two (Dog and Cat) secure the crossings over the Lauter River. The next two the crossings over the Schlitz and the final one secures the bridgehead.

MikeJ19 -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/7/2019 12:01:18 PM)

Concept of Ops

Secure crossing over Lauter R. Then push to Schlitz R and secure crossings. Finally capture Bear.

Speed is important need to capture Dog quickly and be ready to move towards Tiger/Lion.

Three phases:

Phase 1

Inf Coy secures Dog
Armd Coy pushes through Cat

Phase 2

Armd Coy secures Tiger
Armd Coy secures Lion

Phase 3

Inf Coy secures Bear

Throughout
Inf Coy (-) in reserve
AT Pl (-) Northern flank security
AH Sqn Southern flank security
Recce lead

Groupings
One Inf Pl attached to Southern Armd Coy
AT Pl attached to Inf Coy

Concept of Ops

Ignore Dog initially. Secure Cat and then move on Tiger and Lion from the West and South.

Speed is important need to capture Cat quickly and be ready to move towards Tiger/Lion.

Three phases:

Phase 1

Inf Coy pushes through Cat
Armd Coy heads East along the L3139

MikeJ19 -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/8/2019 10:08:42 AM)

Thoughts

My orders are to capture a crossing over the Schlitz river with the 1-32nd. They also state that I am facing a light Soviet screen.

Given this, options 2 and 3 are more complicated than needed, so I will go with option 1.

I need to find, fix and then attack. This means, I need to get recce out early, especially around Dog and towards ANGERSBACH. They need to be looking for Soviet recce elements.

I using my AH and AT Coy as flank security but I still have to be careful that the AH do not get too far out on their own. Also, the AT Coy vehicles are not as mobile or protected as my Bradleys. So, I have to be careful.

With my AH and air support, I need to take out the Soviet AD resources early on this will give me more freedom of movement.

I have 6 hours to secure the crossings at Lion and Tiger. I have time, so I do not have to move too quickly. That being said, speed is important and if I can secure Dog (LAUTERBACH) before the Soviets that will make things easier.

I need to keep my AD units far enough forward to cover my lead troops. I may want to group them with the lead Companies.

Here is a look at my plan:

Man, your AARs sells games better than any youtube videos.

CapnDarwin -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/8/2019 11:26:10 AM)

Mike does great AARs. [&o]

He also shows why planning is a real part of military operations and that there are many factors to consider when doing it. [8D]

Fair enough I accept the criticism. :)

I'm worried that Mike might find the war is already over before his plans are tried. :)

Or as "Mad Jack" Churchill said despondently after the Japanese surrender - "If it hadn't been for the damn Yanks we could have kept the war going another ten years." (Mad Jack was also the last British soldier to kill an enemy with a longbow - a luckless German on the outskirts of Dunkirk in 1940 !)

How about everybody who is following this thread have a go at one of Mike's plans. I'll charge in.

PS - Mike - I like your AARs please don't be put off by my cavalier attitude to shedding the blood of my pixel troops.

MikeJ19 -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/9/2019 12:08:14 AM)

Evening All,

Altipueri, it is fun having someone to chat with and to watch try different things - I learn lots that way. I'm glad that people like my AARs. I have a lot of fun going through them. In some ways, I like the planning as much as the battle - although the battle gives me chances to change things up and to see new planning opportunities.

Feel free to try any on my options. I keep thinking I will come back and try a different option. I have not yet, but one of these days I will start, I think! There are just too many good battles to fight.

Stucco and Jim, thanks for the kind words.

Good gaming!

altipueri -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/13/2019 10:59:59 AM)

Well Mike seems to be busy teaching himself CMANO which I fear means he won't be back soon to show me what I could and should have done.

Anyway, I've tried the scenario a few more times and not got any better than 54% so it would be nice if someone else could have a go and share their results.

I even tried a go with fog of war off, and got some results using artillery mines which are a new toy to me. I'm still reckless with helicopters and forget to move things because even though they say they are unspotted they soon are targets.

Oh and I had 8 Abrams in one hex and lost 7 of them in one artillery pounding. Ouch!

MikeJ19 -> RE: Staff EX 2017 Scenario 1 - 32 Armd Bde (US) (4/13/2019 5:26:23 PM)

Altipueri,

I'm still going to work on this battle, too. Not sure that I will do any better than you. I'm going to have fun, what ever happens.

My forces are starting to move.
